Introduction

As Oklahoma’s second-largest lake, Lake Texoma is a premier destination for water-based recreation, outdoor pursuits, and lots of fun opportunities. It is for this reason it is touted the "Playground of the Southwest." Located 5 miles northwest of Denison along Texas Highway 91 in Oklahoma, this US Army Corps of Engineers park features the twelfth largest lake in the entire US.
As one of the most popular recreation facilities in the State, Lake Texoma is home to a host of fun things to do. Amongst the activities campers and visitors can engage in at this lake park are pleasure boating with sailboats, powerboats and any other vessel of choice; hiking and horseback riding on trails; and fishing for bass, crappie, and catfish. Wildlife and bird viewing opportunities also abound in the park for nature lovers and sightseers. Moreover, picnicking within the scenic spots in the park is an activity you wouldn’t want to miss out on. Nearby attractions include Lake Murray State Park and Eisenhower State Park.
Camping options at Lake Texoma include tent, RV, and equestrian camping. Full, partial, and no hookup options are available in the campsites, and reservations are accepted. Facilities in this COE park include boat ramps, playgrounds, swimming beaches, and dump stations. Campsite amenities range from showers to picnic tables and flush/vault toilets.

Transportation

Driving

Driving to Lake Texoma is quite straightforward as the park is located five miles northwest of Denison along Texas Highway 91, Oklahoma. Major and minor roads grant easy accessibility to the park’s campgrounds and recreation areas. There are no driving restrictions at this COE park and motorhomes can be rented south of the park at Eisenhower State Park.

Parking

Parking spaces are available for vacationers and visitors at and around Lake Texoma to park RVs, trailers, and cars. Campgrounds and recreation areas also have parking pads for vehicles. Moreover, overnight parking is also available.

Public Transportation

There are no direct public transportation services to Lake Texoma.

Campsites in Lake Texoma

Reservations camping

Buncombe Creek

Buncombe Creek is a pet-friendly campground on the northern side of Lake Texoma, open between April and September (peak season). The campsites are available by reservations and consist of amenities such as a dump station, boat ramps, picnic tables, and showers. Other amenities include flush toilets and potable water. Some campsites are also wheelchair accessible.
There are 54 campsites in this campground, all equipped with electric and water hookups for RVs and trailers. The RV length limit is 55 feet.

Burns Run East

Burns Run East is a pet-friendly campground on the southeastern section of Lake Texoma, open year-round; Peak season - April and September. The campsites are available by reservations and consist of amenities such as dump station, boat ramps, picnic tables, and showers. Other amenities include flush and vault toilets and water hydrants.

There are 47 campsites in this campground, 44 of which are equipped with electric and water hookups for RVs and trailers. 19 campsites have full hookups. A day-use group picnic shelter is available in the campground. Maximum RV length that can be accommodated is 95 feet.

Burns Run West

Burns Run West is a pet-friendly campground on the southeastern section of Lake Texoma, open between April and September (peak season). The campsites are available by reservations and consist of amenities such as dump station, boat ramps, picnic tables, and showers. Other amenities include flush and vault toilets, playgrounds and a beach.

There are 117 regular campsites in this campground, 21 of which have full hookup options for RVs/trailers. A total of 106 campsites have electric hookups, while all the campsites have water hookups. Maximum RV length that can be accommodated is 150 feet.

Caney Creek

Caney Creek campground sits on the northern end of Lake Texoma and consists of campsites that are open year-round though peak season (April to September) and non-peak season (October to March). The campsites are available by reservation and have amenities such as showers, vault and flush toilets, a dump station, and a small playground. A boat ramp and day-use group picnic shelter are also located on-site.
This campground features 41 pet-friendly campsites equipped with electric and water hookups for RVs and trailers. Motorhomes longer than 80 feet cannot be accommodated in the campground.

Johnson Creek campground

Johnson Creek campground sits on the eastern side of Lake Texoma and consists of campsites that are open through peak season (May to September). The campsites are available by reservation and have amenities such as showers, picnic tables, vault and flush toilets, a dump station and a small playground. A boat ramp and day-use group picnic shelter are also located on-site.

This campground features 54 pet-friendly campsites equipped with electric and water hookups for RVs and trailers. Motorhomes longer than 90 feet cannot be accommodated in the campground.

Juniper Point

Juniper Point is a pet-friendly campground situated on the Texas side of Lake Texoma that features campsites that are open through peak season (May to September). The campsites are available by reservation and have amenities such as showers, picnic tables, vault and flush toilets, a dump station, and a small playground. A boat ramp and day-use group picnic shelter are also located within the campground.
There are 44 campsites in this campground, and all are equipped with electric and water hookups for RVs and trailers. Rigs longer than 50 feet cannot be accommodated in the campground.

Lakeside (OK)

Lakeside (OK) is a pet-friendly campground situated on the eastern end of Lake Texoma. This campground consists of 137 campsites that are open though peak season (May to September). The campsites are available by reservation and have amenities such as showers, picnic tables, vault and flush toilets, dump station and a small playground. A boat ramp and day-use group picnic shelter are also located within the campground.

All the campsites in the campground have electric and water hookups for RVs and trailers. Rigs longer than 90 feet cannot fit in the campground.

Platter Flats

Platter Flats is a year-round campground open through peak season (April to September) and non-peak season. The campsites are available by reservation and consist of several camping options for equestrians, tents, and RVs.

There are 26 regular campsites with electric and water hookups, 35 equestrian campsites with RV hookups, and three equestrian campsites without hookups. Campground amenities include vault and flush toilets, drinking water, showers, boat ramp, and dump station.

The RV length limit at the campground is 65 feet.

Preston Bend

Preston Bend is a pet-friendly campground on the Texas side of Lake Texoma that is open through peak season (April to September). The campsites are available by reservation and consist of several camping options for RVs, trailers, and tents.
There are 22 regular campsites with electric and water hookups, and 12 campsites without hookups. Campground amenities include vault and flush toilets, drinking water, showers, boat ramp, and dump station.
The RV length limit at the campground is 70 feet.

Seasonal activities in Lake Texoma

In-Season

Boating

With more than 139 square miles of water and large expanses of sandy beaches, campers and visitors at Lake Texoma are presented with excellent boating opportunities and adventures. Whether your preference is a sailboat or powerboat, you’ll find there are plenty of opportunities to explore the park’s waters in your vessels. Your level of adventure will influence how far ashore you go, whether to the deep open water or the sheltered coves. What’s more, there are several marinas around the lake where you’ll find jet skis and boats for rent.

Fishing

The 139 square miles of water available at Lake Texoma offers the chance for fishermen to go after all the fish species that dwell in the water. Regardless of your skill level, you’ll be able to catch fish in the lake. As Texoma is known as the "Striper Capital of the World", campers and visitors who fancy fishing will find striped bass in abundant quantities.

Other fish populations that are present within the lake include smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, white crappie, white bass, and channel catfish. Other species of catfish are also available.

Trails

One of the most popular activities that recreational enthusiasts engage in at Lake Texoma is exploring the many nature trails available in the park. These trails attract millions of outdoor explorers to this COE park annually. The Platter Flats recreation area, for example, features equestrian trails that visitors can ride their horses on for 11 miles. Another trail, the Cross Timbers Hiking Trail, runs for 15 miles along the southern end of the shore and offers panoramic views of the lake to hikers. Trail users in this park enjoy refreshing experiences.

Off-Season

Wildlife and Birds

Wildlife and bird watching enthusiasts love to spend time at Lake Texoma because of the two national wildlife refuges that are available near the park, each offering unforgettable wildlife viewing and photography opportunities. Every year, there are numerous Canada geese and Snow geese, shorebirds, duck species, and bald eagles that migrate to both the Hagerman National Wildlife Refuge and Tishomingo National Wildlife Refuge. Moreover, the 47 square miles of wildlife area in the park is home to wild turkey, deer and other native animals all year.

Sightseeing

There are plenty of sightseeing opportunities at Lake Texoma that present the chance for campers and visitors to take photographs and appreciate the beauty of this lake park. On the north side of the lake, close to Durant, is Fort Washita, a beautiful structure constructed in 1942 and still standing till date. The surrounding towns and communities also hold event and festivals that campers and visitors can participate in to learn and the enjoy the rich culture of the area.

Lake Texoma State Park

A wonderful place to visit while camping at Lake Texoma COE park is Lake Texoma State Park. At the state park, there are enhanced opportunities to enjoy fishing, watersports, and other activities such as hiking and wildlife watching. Besides, there’s a full-service marina with supplies for boating and fishing. Moreover, a gas station and convenience store are also present at the park. So, as you enjoy the US Army COE park, you can take your adventure one step further with a short drive to the state park.
