Start at Main Street, take a left at the Lakefront, and check out Skull Mountain on your way to Adventure Seaport. Visit the Fantasy Forest, Plaza del Carnaval, and the Golden Kingdom before riding the Kingda Ka and Green Lantern. Where can you do all this and more? Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, New Jersey. Never heard of Kingda Ka? It is North America’s tallest roller coaster. Rising 456 feet into the air, riders get to feel the wind in their face going almost 130 miles per hour.
This is not just an amusement park, though. Guests can also go on a safari at the wild animal park and cool off in Hurricane Harbor water park. All this in one place? Yes! After combining its 350-acre animal park with its 125-acre amusement park, it became one of the largest theme parks in the world. Open from April through September with limited hours from October through December, you can enjoy the park almost all year long.
The park also has a section just for young thrill-seekers with 15 fun rides and a bunch of carnival games and food kiosks. Take the kids to ride Wile E. Coyote Canyon Blaster, the Sky Zooma, and Porky Pig Camp Wagons before heading over to Movietown, where you can enjoy arcade games and tasty food at the grill or one of the other eateries. Don’t forget to hit the shops where you can find plenty of souvenirs and other unique items.
Why pay full price if you don’t have to? If you know ahead of time that you are going to Six Flags Great Adventure & Safari, buy your tickets online to get a huge discount. In the past, buying your tickets at the gate could cost you about $85. But if you get them online, you might save up to 50%! Also, if you enjoy theme parks and plan to go more than once or go to more than one Six Flags Park this year, grab a season pass for only a few dollars more than a one-day pass. You can use it at any of the 21 parks across the country!
Located just off I-195, Six Flags Great Adventure is easy to find and a breeze to get to no matter what you are driving. You can reach I-195 from I-95, US-9, US-206, or I-295. In between Philadelphia and New York City, the park is not far from the city while still being far enough from the hustle and bustle to be considered rural. However, routes to the park are highways that are paved, level, and relatively easy to maneuver. While you are in the area, stop by Allaire State Park in Wall Township or Cheesequake State Park in Matawan.
If you decide to drive the rig to the park, you won’t have any trouble finding a spot in their huge parking lot. RVers who plan to visit Six Flags Great Adventure & Safari can get their parking passes online when getting their tickets. This saves time and money when getting to the entrance. That means you have more time and money to spend at the park!
If you don’t want to spend all that time parking, why not leave the rig at the campground or another parking lot and jump on the bus? RVers often take the bus or use a rideshare app to get from their campground to the park. The New Jersey Transit 308 Express Bus can get you there from Penn Station in Newark or the Port Authority Bus Terminal in New York.
Although the park does not have its own campground, it teams up with Timberland Lake Campground, which is just three miles from the park gate. It’s the closest and you get discounted Six Flags tickets if you stay at Timberland. RVers can pick from over 200 sites with utilities on 54 acres. The kids will love the pool, fishing lake, and playground. However, there are plenty of additional places to choose from in the area as well.
For a quieter alternative further from the park, visitors might choose to stay at one of the state parks in the area. Both Allaire State Park and Cheesequake State Parks have campgrounds. And the family campground at Turkey Swamp Park in Freehold, less than 10 miles from the fun, has 64 pull-thru campsites that can handle rigs of any size. With all the amenities, four playgrounds, and a 17-acre lake, you’ll have plenty to do even after you leave Six Flags.
For those visitors who have mobility issues, a large park like Six Flags Great Adventure can feel daunting. The park understands this and makes accommodations for those who need accessibility. Guests can bring their own wheelchairs or rent one at the Guest Relations building on Main Street at the park. In addition, parents who need some help toting around their little bundles of joy can rent a stroller.
Pack comfortable clothes that you can layer so you can remove them as the day heats up because the temps may go from 59 to 89 during your visit. Most visitors you see at the park will be wearing t-shirts and shorts or jeans. Comfortable shoes are a must, and you don’t want to wear anything bulky or clothing that can get in the way when you get on the rides.
Because certain rides like the Superman, Kingda Ka, and Bizzaro do not allow loose items like purses or backpacks, bring as little as possible with you. If you do need to bring a bag, you can rent a locker to keep your items in while you ride the rides. A lot of visitors use fanny packs because they are usually allowed on the rides, and they can hold things like your phone, wallet, and keys.
Another item to bring with you is sunblock because even if you apply it before going into the park, you will need to reapply it several times during the day. Grab a travel-sized bottle that fits in your pocket or fanny pack. The park allows each visitor to have a bottle of water as long as it is still sealed and in a plastic bottle, so make sure you bring one. You can refill them from water fountains around the park.
The gear you need for cooking will depend on the utilities available where you are camping and what you want to do. Even if your campsite is supposed to have full utilities, you should always be prepared in case something goes wrong. Keeping a camp stove and barbecue pit in your rig is a good idea just in case. Also, be sure to stock up on necessities like foil, baggies, trash bags, and eating utensils.
Visitors who are planning to take a trip into town to get a bite to eat with the family can find a plethora of different eateries. There are Mexican restaurants, a New American café, Asian cuisine, and Italian food less than a few miles from Six Flags. If you like pizza, you are in luck because there are a half dozen pizzerias within five miles.
Just like any theme park, Six Flags Great Adventure is separated into different sections (themes), each with their own unique rides, games, and entertainment. And of course, each area has its own eateries. Main Street has the most food choices from Dippin’ Dots ice cream to pizza.
Adventure Alley has a country kitchen with homestyle food. Fantasy Forest has the Yum Yum Café, which boasts all kinds of burgers, fries, and snacks. Of course, you can also find funnel cakes, popcorn, and cotton candy throughout the park. But don’t forget to stop in one of the shops to get souvenirs to take home with you.
Plan on going through metal detectors on your way into the park and be sure to remove any items from your pockets like your keys, cell phone, and wallet. If you have a bag or backpack, get there early because you will have to spend some time at the gate getting your bags searched. Don’t bring any weapons, alcohol, glass, drugs or other prohibited items with you to the park.
New Jersey can be hot and sweaty in the summer, and Jackson is no different. The average highs are typically in the 80s with lows in the 60s. Rain is frequent in this part of the country as well, so pack some rain gear like a poncho that fits in your pocket and a hat. Download a weather app to your phone to stay updated on the local weather at all times.
Even if you just have a small scrape or bump your head, remember to get checked out at one of the first-aid centers. Six Flags Great Adventure has medical personnel on-site in the Boardwalk area by Six Flags Kids and behind the Garden State Grill. If your injury or illness is more serious, they will provide transport to the nearest hospital, which is 16 miles away.
