Thankfully, the Bank Campground is located fairly close to large cities like Colorado Springs and Denver, Colorado. Located just off Shelf Road in Canon City, the Bank Campground isn’t too hard to find. It is in the middle of the mountains, which may mean you’ll encounter some twists and turns during your route. Because it snows quite a bit in Colorado during the cooler months, it’s important to check the weather before loading up the RV. If there’s a lot of snow coming down, it can be hard to navigate the local roads.
Check ahead for detours or road closures. Pack a physical map in the event that the phone service goes out as well. Upon arriving at the Bank Campground, there are a few different ways that you can get around. The most common way is on foot. Whether you plan on hiking or just walking around, this is the easiest way to get around the area. You could also bring the mountain bike along if you’re looking for a rush. Lastly, depending on when you visit, you can travel around on a snowmobile, four-wheeler, or even skis!

First-come first-served
The Bank Campground
With 13 campsites available, you may as well stay at the Bank Campground. This saves you time from exploring the other camping options when you’re already at the Bank Campground. Each campsite is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Camping is allowed in a tent, hammock, or an RV. It’s important to mention the RVs must be 22 feet in total length or less in order to park and camp there. There aren’t any RV hookups available either.
You will find a picnic table and fire ring available at each campsite there. There is a barbecue grill for the entire campsite to use to cook up meals. You will also find that there are restrooms available as well. Staying right at the Bank Campground allows you to quickly and easily access all of the fun outdoor activities that you just read about. It’s a beautiful place to stay when visiting this area of Colorado.
Sand Gulch Campground
Another great place to rest your head is Sand Gulch Campground. This is a beautiful option that is located in an open meadow, directly below giant cliffs. This campground sits at around 6,5000 feet and is open year-round. There are 16 campsites that are available on a first-come, first-served basis to locals and visitors alike. There are tent pads at each site, along with a picnic table, and a fire ring. Sand Gulch Campground offers a vault toilet for your convenience at well.
There is no water available, meaning you’ll need to bring your own. Due to the location of Sand Gulch, this campground is best stayed at during the autumn or spring. The individual campsites can house up to ten people and the group campsites, which are double the price, can hold up to twenty people. If you’re an avid rock climber or enjoy an evening or morning hike, Sand Gulch is a solid choice for a campground.
Clyde Campground
Clyde Campground is incredibly peaceful and a stunning place to stay towards the end of summer or beginning of fall. Camping here is available for visitors on a first-come, first-served basis. This campground is open year-round and is incredibly affordable - in fact, it’s free. Many people enjoy staying at Clyde Campground to get a break from the hustle and bustle of Colorado Springs. There are around five campsites there and each of them is dispersed.
You can camp in a tent or RV at Clyde Campground, but don’t expect to find any RV hookups available. With a plethora of lush trees and rolling hills in the distance, camping at Clyde Campground really makes you feel immersed in nature. There are also plenty of wild animals roaming the area. If you’re someone who wants to get a bit of wildlife viewing in during your time away from the Bank Campground, this is a great alternative.

In-Season
OHV Riding
A fun activity that you can enjoy while visiting the Bank Campground is riding an off-highway vehicle. The most common OHV options are four-wheelers or dirt bikes. This is a unique way to travel around and see the area on wheels. It’s important to note that there are specific weeks during the year that require riders to have a permit. This is a thrilling activity that the entire family can enjoy while visiting the Bank Campground.
Mountain Biking
Another thrilling activity that you may enjoy is an afternoon of mountain biking. Mountain biking in this area of Colorado should be done only by people with plenty of experience. If you’ve never been mountain biking before, be sure to get in plenty of practice.
There are gravel roads and steep, rocky trails for visitors to enjoy. Be sure to bring a high-quality helmet to keep your noggin safe. Due to the terrain, it might be a good idea to bring a hand-powered air pump as well.
