Brown County State Park is a good place to start your adventure. The 16,000 acres of ridges, ravines, and hills were created by the last ice age, which created the environment with its meltwaters. It is Indiana's largest park, having 20 miles of roads lined with trees that are the front of an extensive uninterrupted forest. The park's color is autumn-hued, with viewpoints looking out over the entire area; it has interpretive services, a swimming pool, hiking and biking trails, horse trails and guided horse rides. It is open all year round, although opening-closing times may change according to the season. In 1940, the federal government leased land to Indiana; it was designated as a park at that time, and later deeded to Indiana permanently. Reforestation efforts focused on planting seeds for red, jack, shortleaf, scotch and white pines, black locust, black walnut, white and red oak, but only some of the species survived while most of the others were affected by insects, disease and harsh winters. Today, Yellowwood State Forest is a good destination for hiking, picnicking, fishing, hunting and gold panning (but you will need a license to pan for gold). The hiking trails range from one to 42 miles in length but most are only one to four miles long.
