Incorporated and officially declared a town on January 1, 1874, Orangeville originated as early as 1820, when two men purchased plots of land where the town now stands. As more people arrived, the community continued to grow and in 1863 was unofficially named after Orange Lawrence, a Connecticut businessman, in 1863. Its public library, which still stands today at the corner of Mill Street and Broadway, was built in 1908, due in part to financial assistance from famed philanthropist and businessman Andrew Carnegie.
Orangeville is the administrative and commercial hub of Dufferin County, as well as its county seat.
