Selmier State Forest was created from a private land donation to the state. The previous owner, Frank Selmier, was an avid outdoorsman who planted numerous tree species on the property, such as pine and black walnut. There is a rifle and archery shooting range in the park. Hiking is allowed, but trails are not marked; hikers can pick mushrooms, nuts, and berries, but other vegetation should not be disturbed.
