Getting Outdoors
Despite the growing number of private properties dotted along Lake Martin’s vast shoreline, there are still plenty of opportunities for the general public to enjoy the freshwater lake. Boating is by far, one of the best and most popular ways to explore the reservoir. Those camping at Lake Martin with their own vessel can make a beeline for one of the many boat launch ramps that make accessing the waters a breeze. While watercraft are permitted on the lake, consider spending an afternoon exploring some of the islands that can be found here. Though some of these are privately owned, islands such as Sand Island, Graveyard Island, and Goat Island all welcome visitors. Manned by volunteers alone, do remember to take all of your belongings and garbage with you when you leave!
Camping at Lake Martin
Despite Lake Martin's enormous size, there is only one place to set up camp with your RV rental, and that is at Wind Creek State Park. Found on the north-west banks of Lake Martin, and just a stone’s throw away from Alexander City, consider staying here should you enjoy having city conveniences not too far away. The campsite itself is relatively basic but has enough space to accommodate over 600 vehicles. Each site enjoys partial hookups of 20 amp electricity and potable water, and there are a few dump stations on-site too. Those traveling without a self-contained rental RV will be glad to learn that there are hot showers on site along with some flushing toilets.
Exploring the Area
When you rent a camper near Lake Martin, the city of Montgomery will be less than an hour’s drive away and is the perfect place to soak in some of the state’s culture. Opened in 2018, The Legacy Museum is a must-visit for anyone interested in learning about the history of slavery and racism in the US. Stretching across several floors, this fascinating museum not only showcases these issues in the country’s past but also addresses the contemporary problems we face today with racial segregation. This somber but enlightening museum includes a collection of soil from lynching sites across the US along with well-curated documentaries showcasing the horrors of enslavement.
