Getting Outdoors
Lee County Public Lake is the perfect place for a day’s fishing, as you’d expect, either from the bank or by boat. The fish stocks are maintained and include largemouth bass, bluegill, sunfish, catfish, and crappie. You’ll find a covered fishing pier, boat ramp, and a concession providing all your bait and tackle needs. There are also public restrooms, a store selling snacks, and limited space for parking your rental RV. Boats and trolling motors can be rented at the lake for a small fee, and you must buy a daily fishing permit.Birdwatching is also popular here, with a variety of birds on the lake and in the surrounding woodlands. Wading birds such as herons, along with beautiful kingfishers, indigo buntings, and eastern kingbirds, can all be spotted along the lake edge. On the water, expect various waterfowl such as the ruddy duck, and canvasback, particularly in winter.A little way north of Lee County Public Lake, close to the town of Opelika, there are several hiking trails. For birdwatching, take a look at the Piedmont Plateau Birding Trail. This 1.5-mile loop circles a pond that is used by many species of birds, and it’s an easy walk for the whole family, including your dog, but they must be kept on a leash.Near to Auburn is the Chewacla State Park. This beautiful park has nearly 700-acres to explore, a 26-acre lake with a swimming area, and a campground perfect for camping with an RV. Fishing is allowed in the lake and the two creeks in the park. You’ll also find hiking and mountain bike trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas.
Camping at Lee County Public Lake
There are no campgrounds at Lee County Public Lake, but just a couple of miles north is Spring Villa Campground. As part of the Spring Villa Park complex, the campground has over 30 campsites, all with full hookups available, and restrooms with showers. In Spring Villa Park, there are outdoor sports facilities, nature trails, and picnic areas.On the edge of Auburn, is Eagle’s Landing RV Park. Along with concrete parking pads, and full hookups, there are pull-thru campsites for larger rental RVs. The site is set up with everything you need when motorhome camping with restrooms and showers, a laundry, free WiFi, and a clubhouse to enjoy a great evening with fellow campers. Shopping and a golf course are located close by.Chewacla State Park Campground is beautifully located under the shade of trees, giving secluded campsites. All the sites have full hookups, are well-spaced for your privacy, and there are two modern restrooms on-site.
Exploring the Area
When you plan to camp with an RV at Spring Villa Campground, then make sure you pay a visit to Penn Yonge House. Built-in the 1850s by Horace King, a part African, part Catawba Indian who had been enslaved, and was “owned” by the Yonge family. Once freed, he became a prolific builder and built this house for Penn and Mary Yonge. The wooden clapboard house has been beautifully restored and is listed as a Historic Place.Located on the Auburn University campus is the Jule Collins Smith Museum of Fine Art. Housing a range of works from traditional to contemporary in six exhibition galleries, there is bound to be something for everyone to enjoy. The main focus of the museum is on American and European art from the 19th and 20th centuries.Every April, Auburn holds its City Fest in Kiesel park. It’s a full day of family entertainment, music, and much more. Along with craft vendors, there is also a juried art show, so should you happen to be a budding artist, this could be the perfect day out. If beer and great food are more of an attraction for you, then don’t miss the Auburn Oktoberfest held each October. Packed with traditional sounds and tastes of Germany, with oompah bands and sausages, it’s bound to be a fun day for the whole family.
