Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division maintains the lake and restocks it regularly. Mitchell Lake can be easily accessed, with several boat ramps on the east and west banks.
Camping at Mitchell Lake
Higgins Ferry Park is located right next to Mitchell Lake, making this campground a favorite among campers who want to have easy access to the water. The campground itself is not very large, but it has all the basic amenities one could need during their stay here. Those who go camping at Mitchell Lake will be able to use a bathhouse with hot showers, as well as picnic areas and a playground. The campground has a boat ramp and a small swimming area that is reserved for campers only.
Exploring the Area
Montgomery is the capital of Alabama, and it is known as the place of origin for the Civil Rights Movement. Citizens of Montgomery are very proud of their history, and visitors may see that by visiting some of the museums here. Mitchell Lake campers could start their tour at the Rosa Parks Library and Museum. Dedicated mostly to the Montgomery Bus Boycott, the museum is an excellent place for younger visitors who want to learn more about segregation and see how much things have changed over the decades. The interactive exhibits will provide the visitors with a complete timeline, depicting the struggles of the Civil Rights Movement, as well as the accomplishments.
