It originated in the mid-19th century near a settlement known as Jennie’s Colony when the adjacent area of land was purchased by Cyrus G. McCrory. The St. Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railroad arrived in 1886, with the town of McCrory officially established during the same year.
