Getting Outdoors
Ringed by mountain peaks the shallow-but-wide lake is calm and warm, even on a cool evening. The hot springs are heated by the nearby Lassen Volcano, which is a semi-dormant volcano, and the springs, in turn, warm the alpine lake. It otherwise would be a few degrees above freezing even in summer. A hidden gem, Lake Almanor very occasionally becomes what passes for crowded. In June and July, fly fishermen ascend to the lake solely to watch the Hexagina Hatch, which is an unusual phenomenon. There are two boat launches available for the public, and the marina operates a boat-rental service as well. Locals and visitors enjoy everything from tubing to water-skiing on the lake. Scuba dive, too, and search for the remnants of lost towns that were flooded when the dam was created in 1914.
Camping at Lake Almanor
Camping with an RV at Lake Almanor is a time-honored tradition. Dozens of RV campgrounds line the shores. Camp with an RV on the south end for a stellar view of the Lassen Volcano. Rocky Point Campground and Mountain View Campground, near Canyondam, CA, also feature lakeside sites and bathroom access. The campgrounds are small, and there are no electric hookups. Dogs are welcomed, though, and the easy access to bankside fishing is a nice plus, too.
Exploring the Area
Hop into a rental motorhome and hit the road. Drive along the mountaintops, skimming the steaming Lassen Volcanic National Park. Taking the Lassen Scenic Byway, pass by - or stop at - dozens of waterfalls within walking distance of the byway. Explore the sinister collapsed lava tube called Pluto’s Cave, near Weed, CA. Ogle Mount Shasta, the current second-tallest volcano in the country. Continue on to the Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, home of one of the largest herds of Tule Elks.

This RV was awesome! Dave and Jennifer have the motorhome completely loaded with everything you need. Just toss in clothes, food , drinks, and hit the road. They were very helpful when we picked up the RV and ensured they would be available throughout the trip if we had any questions. It’s obvious to me they go the extra mile to supply a clean, well maintained, and comfortable product. This makes for a stress free relaxing vacation. We had a fantastic experience! We initially had trouble finding someone to rent from, but Outdoorsy ended up sending people to us. Nestor is great - great communication, timely drop-off and pick-up. He set everything up and showed us how to work with the various systems and the generator. Highly recommend!
