Getting Outdoors

The Independence Trail is among the favorite hiking locations for residents of Sacramento and the surrounding communities. It is located within South Yuba River State Park. John Olmsted, a famous naturalist, and conservationist created the trail with the help of volunteers. This Independence Trail is also famous for being the first handicapped-accessible wilderness trail in the United States. Hikers may enjoy the changing landscape since the trail passes through different parts of the state park. It is more than 2.5 miles long in one direction and very beginner-friendly, without many climbs.

The unique nature of South Yuba River State Park makes this park quite attractive to birdwatchers. The scenery is simply magical, with dense pine forests and blooming wildflowers near the trails. This state park is home to numerous bird species. Migrating birds also make a stop here on their way to the south. Song sparrows live close to the river, while turkey vultures and red-tailed hawks circle high in the skies. Camping at South Yuba River State Park

While South Yuba River State Park doesn’t have a campground, those who wish to go motorhome camping here may stay in a nearby South Yuba Recreation Area. The rustic campground is surrounded by the forest and has six sites that can accommodate RVs that are up to 22 feet long. This camp offers just basic amenities such as toilets, picnic areas, and trash pick-up. Each site has a fire pit and a picnic table.

No hookups are available here, but campers will have access to water. If you plan on building a campfire, you need to have a permit first. It is also important to mention that the South Yuba Recreation Area is not pet-friendly. The campground is open from early April to mid-October, depending on the weather. Reservations are not possible since the campground runs on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Exploring the Area

Yuba City has an American small-town charm that will make you feel like you are a part of the community right away. Located near the confluence of Yuba and Feather Rivers, Yuba City residents enjoy amazing weather all year round. South Yuba River State Park campers could spend an eventful day here, touring the landmarks and eating delicious local food.

Visitors who enjoy learning historical things about a place they are visiting could start their tour at the Community Memorial Museum of Sutter County. This museum opened its doors in 1975, with a mission of preserving the past of Sutter County. Today, visitors may view over 15,000 artifacts and several exhibits that may teach you about this part of California through the centuries. From the Nisenan who lived in this part of California, to the modern-day, this museum offers a complete view of Yuba City’s rich cultural past.

The Sutter Buttes lay just outside of Yuba City, and this geological curiosity is a must-see. The lava domes were created 1.6 million years ago, and they are the smallest mountain range in the world. The ingenious people who lived in the area considered these domes to be an important part of their culture and religion. Today, visitors may access just a small portion of the Sutter Buttes with a certified guide from the Sutter County Historical Society.

When you want to try some local delicacies, head downtown and select one of many restaurants located there. Fried chicken and burgers are favorites among Yuba City residents. Visitors who are in the mood for international cuisine may visit the Italian restaurant nearby.
