Discover Lake Pillsbury RV rentals for memorable road trips

One of the few manmade alpine lakes in the country, Lake Pillsbury was created in 1921 when the Scott Dam was constructed. The dam supplies power to the town of Ukiah, and a mile-long tunnel was built to divert the spillway water to Russian River, one of the few of its kind. Today, the lake is a popular recreational spot for many. On the southern end of the lake is a small community of summer homes. On the north end, set back into the trees away from the water is a small subdivision of homes. This neighborhood was once owned by entertainers Jackie Gleason and Jack Haley, who developed the area for residential homes.

Getting Outdoors

Nestled in the heart of Mendocino National Forest, Lake Pillsbury is a small 2,000-acre waterway. The recreational activities, as well as the scenery, more than makes up for its diminutive size. Nearly at the top of the mountains, the hills that cup this small lake are low, and the sky overhead wide and close. On an especially clear day, locals have remarked, touching the sky is almost possible. The shores are lined by gnarled oaks and pines, warped and twisted by the harsh winters. Every spring, they turn green and lush again. Sheltered underneath their branches, wild grasses, flowers, and bushes thrive with dappled sunlight. A short walk away from the shore brings explorers to a vista that reveals just high they really are. Down below, the land falls away, revealing a vast, panoramic valley dotted by lakes and ponds.

Camping at Lake Pillsbury

When heading up to Lake Pillsbury in a rental RV, don't forget to make a plan, and figure out where you’ll park it while you embark on an adventure. There are six small RV campgrounds surrounding the lake’s perimeter. Amenities for each vary. Although none of these campgrounds have hookups, most sites have a waterfront view, fire rings, and are a short walk to the restroom facilities. All campgrounds allow dogs. Be aware, when you search for an RV in Mendocino, CA, that these campgrounds have a limit on vehicle lengths ranging from 15 feet to 25 feet.

Exploring the Area

This far out in northwestern California, it’s natural to think that there are few sightseeing spots and recreational activities. Au contraire. With a little patience and the help of a trusty motorhome rental to transport explorers from town to town, there’s plenty of fun to be had.

This is our third year renting an RV through Outdoorsy. Dan was the absolute best host who communicated clearly. We loved the size of the RV. We have been in smaller and larger RV's. The way the kitchen is laid out and open the whole room (instead of a galley kitchen) made the whole place feel much bigger. It was spotless and Dan's wife left us some flowers in the RV which was a sweet touch. The kitchen had great supplies. I would just add more salad/mixing bowls. Dan delivered our RV on time and showed up on Sunday before noon which was perfect (as we have had to wait in the past). We really enjoyed this experience and would gladly rent from him again in a year!

This was our first Outdoorsy experience and it was fantastic. Kate's trailer was clean, well stocked, and exactly as advertised. Kate was very communicative and friendly and the entire experience was great! We would be thrilled to rent from Kate again.
