On the northern shores of Clear Lake in Northern California, is the small community of Lucerne. This peaceful lakefront area is home to a few thousand people but lacks the designation of being either a city or town. Before it was called Lucerne, the area was named Clear Lake Beach. Before the arrival of settlers from the east, Lucerne was called Sikom by the native Pomo people who called California home for thousands of years.

Lucerne is a gorgeous place to rent an RV, especially if you intend to travel around the area and camp out at various parks, recreation areas, and campgrounds. The state capital, Sacramento, is a two hour's drive east of Lucerne, and San Francisco is a few hours' drive south, so there are essentially very few cities or large towns in the immediate area. What you will find, however, when you book an RV in Lucerne, is that Clear Lake is one of the most amazing places you could possibly vacation, lined with all sorts of different towns and communities that happily welcome tourists and travelers.

Outdoors Adventures

Clear Lake is such a wonderful place to vacation at especially if you rent an RV and have the freedom to find your favorite hidden beach on the lakeshore. Clear Lake State Park can be found on the far side of the lake, directly across from Lucerne. The park is a popular recreation hub on the water where you can hike, fish, swim, ride bicycles, boat, bird watch, or simply read a book on the beach. There are boat launches for those with their own boats, and two campgrounds where you can stay with your Lucerne RV rental.

South Cow Mountain OHV Recreation Area is west of Lucerne and has some excellent dirt roads you can drive on, provided your Lucerne camper rental can handle it. The mountain has a few different campgrounds where you can stay, and lots of off-roading trails for mountain biking, hiking, ATVs, motorcycles, and more. The rugged mountain park is a great place to hunt or go fishing in season and there are even horseback riding trails for people to use.

It would be difficult to ignore Mendocino National Forest, as it is quite close to town and nearly a million acres of pristine wilderness. Letts Lake and Lake Pillsbury are two large lakes found within the forest that have their own hiking trails and campgrounds and there are countless other camping spots available to you when you rent an RV and head into the forest. There are plenty of stoic wild animals to see while hiking through the forests and over the Sanhedrin Mountains in Mendocino National Forest, and over 60,000 acres of ancient old-growth forest that has been left undisturbed by human influence.

For a change in scenery, head to the coast and check out Manchester State Park over by the town of Manchester and Point Arena. This exceptional park contains miles of protected coastline, with sandy beachfront and unbeatable views of the water. You can even spot breaching gray and humpback whales off the shore or walk through magical meadows of wildflowers on the way to the beach. There are first-come, first-serve camping spots available at this incredible recreation area so be sure to spend at least one night at Manchester State Park with your Lucerne RV rental by owner.

RV Parks to Visit

Lucerne is located, of course, on Clear Lake, which happens to be a popular vacation and recreation spot, particularly in the summer months. Due to this popularity, the shores of the lake are lined with RV parks and campgrounds that you can utilize while you rent an RV in Lucerne.

Holiday Harbor Marina & RV Park has its own marina where people may dock and refuel their boats. There are big-rig friendly RV camping spots, and a convenient general store for your food and camping supply needs.

Island RV Park is a smaller park on the shores of Clear Lake, with large private camping sites and beachfront access. You can fish, boat, swim, jet ski, waterski, or go tubing while you stay at this RV park. The Aurora Marina & RV Park also has its own marina much like Holiday Harbor, along with lakefront camping sites. There are unbeatable fishing spots and lots of local conveniences within walking distance.

City Sightseeing

Lucerne is a small community on the shores of Clear Lake, so you won’t be finding many attractions aside from a few stellar beaches and some restaurants. Your best bet to find other attractions would be in nearby towns like Lakeport or Ukiah. Lakeport has the fantastic Historic Courthouse Museum, housed in the old courthouse for Lake County. This fascinating museum has a wealth of information regarding the geology of Clear Lake, the Pomo indigenous people, the first settlers, and memorials to the police and firefighters who served the community. There are some gorgeous pieces of indigenous jewelry, artwork, and artifacts in the museum for those interested in learning more about Native Americans.

Ukiah is a bit farther from Lucerne, but worth a visit for a variety of reasons. The town is surrounded by vineyards, so wine tasting is deeply ingrained in the culture. There are a handful of wineries and breweries in the area where you can sample locally produced alcohols of all types. The Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah is dedicated to the memory of Grace Carpenter Hudson, a painter that once lived in the area. There are more than just galleries of Grace Hudson’s works on display; ever-changing exhibits featuring local artists, and lots of Pomo indigenous artwork can be seen and studied at this incredible place.
