Once a waystation for a stagecoach route in between Calistoga, CA, and Lower Lake, Middletown was officially founded in 1871. The main industries were mercury mining and cattle ranching. However, when the locals realized the potential in the mineral springs, a small resort industry prang up. As travel became cheaper and faster in the mid-20th century, the resorts died off because the Bay area vacationers sought out more far-flung, exotic locations. Today, the town residents are mostly retirees and commuters who work in the nearby larger towns.

Slightly north of the world-famous Napa Valley wine region, Middletown is a great place to rent an RV in. It’s close to the wineries and to several nature parks and forests. The closest large town is Clearlake about 16 miles north. Santa Rosa is a little over 30 miles south.

Discover Middletown

The Great Outdoors

Skip the air-conditioned hotels and get closer to nature in a Middletown RV rental. Commune with nature. Witness wildlife in their natural environment. The Mendocino National Forest is one of the larger parks in California, covering nearly a million acres. It’s unique in that there are no major paved roads or highways running through (though there are paved country roads and dirt roads). There are several hundred miles of hiking and biking trails, and it’s worth noting that the park rangers are unable to maintain several trails due to the sheer size of this park. To that end, it’s easy to lose the trail, and reading a topographical map is an essential skill. All hikers and adventurers should also pack extra water. An arid region, water sources are scarce. Because this dry region is prone to wildfires, everyone should obtain a campfire permit before starting one if they’re not in a designated campground. Your Middletown travel trailer rental will be in good company. Several campgrounds permit RVs and campers, though only the Red Bluff Recreation Area’s campgrounds have hookups and dump stations.

Lake Berryessa, just north of Napa Valley, is a popular water recreational area. It’s well known for its “glory hole,” which is a unique type of spillway. In especially wet years when the water levels rise enough, a circular (and dangerous) drain forms. Both locals and folks from out-of-town engage in activities like jet-skiing, boating, fishing, swimming, water skiing, and more. The southern end of the lake is set aside for a “sea landing strip,” from which seaplanes can land or takeoff. Note that there is a standing advisory on fish caught at Berryessa due to an elevated level of mercury. It’s recommended that people eat Berryessa fish no more than three times a week, and pregnant or ill people should abstain.

RV Parks

When you book an RV in Middletown, CA, don’t forget to figure out where you’ll park while you go exploring or grab some Zs. There are about a dozen campgrounds and RV parks within 15 miles radius. Hidden Valley Lake Campground is a small facility with 18 lots with hookups and several more without, some of which overlooks a small lake. The restroom and showers are ADA-compliant. Note that due to county restrictions, stays can be no longer than two weeks.

Calistoga RV Park, on the northern tip of Napa Valley, 30 and 50 amps hookups, water, and sewer. Also pet-friendly, the park boasts easy access to the local public golf course and the town’s art center.

Pine Grove Resort up near Lakeport is set in deep woods. It boasts swimming pools fed by natural springs, partial hookups (no sewer), and pets are allowed.

Exploring the City

Middletown is a classic small town, the type where everyone seems to know everyone, and the neighborhood busybody has the latest gossip ready to dole out. The main street is lined with chic coffee cafes, boutique shops, and restaurants. The Gibson Museum and Cultural Center features the local history, detailing the lives of the pioneers far before the town’s official founding, complete with photographs, documents, and other artifacts.

Once the town has been explored, a Middletown motorhome rental will make hitting the road in search of new adventure effortless. "Go West, Young Man!" Southwest of the town is Safari West, a 400-acre preserve on which wild animals roam free while humans are contained in the open-air vehicles. This park is one of the few of its kind in the United States. In addition to being an educational facility, Safari West is a world-class breeding facility, specializing in endangered animals like southern white rhinoceros, giraffes, cheetahs, several species of lemurs, hooded vulture, and many more. Thanks to places like Safari West, there is hope, albeit a slim one, that these endangered and extinct-in-wild animals can one day be reintroduced to the wild. In the interim, the visitors’ Safari tours of the facilities support their conservation efforts. Visitors can also opt for wild encounters in which they get a behind-the-scenes look at what goes into the animals’ care and even get some hands-on experience. Safari West also hosts several special events throughout the year, such as the “Sippin’ Safari,” at which guests enjoy Napa Valley wines as the staff expert guides you on an adventure through the various exhibits.

Hop into an RV rental and head down south into Napa Valley. Premier wineries blanket the gently rolling landscape, covering the hills in green and gold. Chateau Montelena Winery in Calistoga is perhaps one of the best-known vineyards. The winery was founded in 1882, and the facility is housed in a genuine gothic-style castle covered with trailing moss. The tasting room overlooks a lush Chinese garden and a small lake. The entire property, as one might expect, is surrounded by neat rows of grapevines. In addition to walk-in tastings, tours of the vineyard and the cellar are also available. The award-winning winery offers both whites, reds and limited edition of rare port wine.
