Looking for that perfect summer getaway spot where you can cool off during the scorching summer days and spend some time surrounded by amazing natural beauty? Well, look no further than Richardson Grove State Park. Located some four hours north of San Francisco, this park boasts nearly 1,800 acres of awe-inspiring land dominated by redwood forest and the southern part of the Eel River.

The park's origins go back to 1922, when it became one of the first redwood parks in Northern California. Throughout the years, the park has consistently grown to become one of the most immersive and popular tourist attractions in this part of the Sunny State.

Once you're here, you'll quickly realize why so many people from all over the country flock to this place all year long. Aside from relishing in the breathtaking beauty of the redwood forest and meeting some of the majestic animals that call this park home, you can also engage in a wide variety of exciting outdoor activities that will make your adventure much more fulfilling. While camping with an RV in Richardson Grove State Park, you can swim and relax in the Eel River, hike through the redwood grove, catch some fish, and so much more.

Renting an RV and getting all the necessary supplies for your camping odyssey shouldn't be an issue, mainly due to the park's proximity to the towns of Leggett (15 miles), Miranda (20 miles), and Eureka (74 miles). Start planning your adventure among the redwoods and book an RV in Humboldt County.

Discover Richardson Grove State Park

Getting Outdoors

Once you start exploring Richardson Grove State Park, you'll be amazed by the ancient redwoods towering overhead. Some of these trees are more than 1,000 years old and over 300 feet tall! Additionally, you won't have to look hard to spot some of the beautiful animals that inhabit this place, such as otters, gray foxes, bald eagles, ospreys, and black-tailed deer.

Venture down to the southern fork of the Eel River, one of the main features of the park. Avid anglers can cast a line into the water and wait for steelhead and salmon to bite. Of course, if you just want to beat the summer heat, you can take a swim in the river. Keep in mind that the swimming area has no active lifeguards and that jumping and diving into the river are not permitted.

The park also features almost nine miles of hiking trails that take visitors across the calming Eel River and through the mysterious redwoods. Hopping onto these trails will provide you with a great opportunity to stay in shape and investigate some of the more unique flora specimens, such as the chandelier tree. You might even spot the Yuma brown bat!

Exploring the Area

Camping at state parks is always made better by taking your adventure outside of the park’s boundaries. One spot you won't want to miss nearby is Confusion Hill in Piercy. Here, you can learn more about the Northern California redwoods and engage in a number of fun activities with your loved ones. Make sure to check out the Gravity House, which will let you experience some amazing optical illusions. Also, don't forget to drop by the gift shop and purchase unique, hand-crafted redwood souvenirs.

If you want to experience more of California's exquisite natural beauty, take some time to visit the Sequoia Park Zoo in Eureka. This place is a must-see for any true animal lover out there. Visitors can get an up-close look at the gorgeous red panda, banana slug, flamingos, Chacoan peccaries, and so much more.

Since you're already in Eureka, you should consider visiting the Humboldt Arts Council. Experience the history and the spirit of Humboldt County through a variety of artworks and get all the inspiration you might need to make some great art of your own.

Exploring this area cannot be truly complete without getting a taste of it. Head a few miles north of the park to find a few restaurants offering everything from Mexican to Cajun cuisine. You can also rest easy knowing that there are a few gas stations scatted around this area where you can quickly resupply and gas up your RV rental.
