The town of Sierraville sits in a valley on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada range in northern California. It’s a rural location with most of the surrounding area being dedicated to pasture, with more livestock than people making their home here. While San Francisco and Los Angeles are known for their traffic, it won’t be a problem when you book an RV in Sierraville as there’s so little of it that the town has the distinction of harboring the only traffic light in the county. If all of this sounds a bit too off-the-beaten-path though, you could easily take a day trip to Reno when you get a motorhome rental in Sierraville.

Sierraville is conveniently located at the intersection of California Routes 89 and 49, which can take you through some of the state’s most famous Gold Country communities. It's also on the eastern border of Tahoe National Forest, and Plumas National Forest is just 45 miles to the north. If you’re looking to spend some time outside or explore the historical roots of this little visited region of California, Sierraville is a great jumping off point.

Discover Sierraville

The Great Outdoors

Some amazing forests filled with hiking, mountain biking, and watersports opportunities surround Sierraville, and all it takes to find a great adventure is a quick drive up one of the many forest-service roads spreading out from the town. Plumas-Eureka State Park is only a short drive to the north of Sierraville and has a number of historical buildings preserved from California’s Gold Rush days. There’s also some decent fishing in James Creek, which flows through the park, and access to the famed Pacific Crest Trail.

When you rent an RV here, you’ll also have the chance to experience one of America’s less-frequently visited national parks, Lassen Volcanic National Park. But it’s not for lack of interesting things to see that Lassen has few visitors, as its one of the only places outside its more famous cousin, Yellowstone National Park, where you can see geysers in action. A hike to its 10,000-foot namesake peak is a must when visiting Lassen Volcanic National Park as it’s only five miles round trip and not as difficult as many other hikes in the Sierra Nevada Range.

Lake Tahoe is also within easy driving distance of Sierraville and is one of the most famous outdoor recreation spots in northern California. Here you can rent kayaks, swim in the beautiful blue waters, hike dozens of great trails, or just sun yourself on one of the big sandy beaches. Lake Tahoe is one of the best day trips to take when you get an RV rental in Sierraville, CA.

RV Parks

Despite its small population, the Sierra Valley has quite a few good places where you can camp when you choose an RV rental in Sierraville. Clio’s River’s Edge RV Park is just outside of Sierraville and offers full hookups, showers, laundry facilities, a playground for the kids, and a dog park for your four-legged friend. They’re also right next to the Feather River and its many kayaking and fishing opportunities.

Another option is the Sierra Skies RV Park in Sierra City, just off Route 49 in the Sierra Nevada Range. This is a good choice if you’d prefer somewhere more mountainous for camping with your travel trailer rental in Sierraville. There you’ll have access to full hookups, a dump station, laundry facilities, and some fantastic hiking trails. The surrounding area is loaded with amazing historical sites too, so if you’ve ever wanted to learn more about California’s Gold Rush period, this is a great place to stay.

For a truly rustic experience though, consider taking your camper rental in Sierraville to the Dream Catcher Campground just north of town. Located just outside the national forest, Dream Catcher’s sites have full hookups, and there are all sorts of activities happening every day like organized hiking trips, corn hole, and archery events. If you love being outside and would like to spend time with others who share your passion, Dream Catcher Campground could be a good place to camp.

Exploring the City

The Sierra Hot Springs are definitely the main attraction for those visiting the Sierraville region. The naturally fed springs are the perfect place to recharge with views of the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada range just outside the resort. In addition to the relaxing waters, you can also book a massage or various spa treatments.

For those looking to learn about California’s early history, check out the Kentucky Mine Museum in Sierra City. The guided tour takes visitors through the workings of a mining town from the mine’s headframe to the stamp mills that crush ore into tiny bits. It’s a chance to see just how hard life was in 19th-century California and the struggles that many went through trying to make a living from the mountain’s riches.

Given its small size, there aren’t too many restaurants in the Sierraville area, and they fall into two main categories: standard American and Mexican cuisine. However, since the area does see its fair share of tourists, most of them serve food that is a cut above what you’d expect for a town of its size.
