Yreka is a small town in northern California by the Oregon border. In 1851, gold was discovered by Yreka, and several months later, 2,000 prospectors called the town home. No one is sure where the name for the town came from, with some claiming that it comes from the native Shasta word for “white mountain.” Famed author Mark Twain famously wrote that the name came from someone seeing the opposite side of a bakery sign where the B was missing, and Yreka was chosen by residents who thought it was quite funny. The origin of the name might be a mystery to this day, though the town’s popularity as a vacation destination is no secret.
