In the early 1800s, the lands currently occupied by the city of Oakville were purchased from aboriginal peoples so British immigrants could settle there. Coronation Park is one example of how Oakville utilizes its public space for the benefit of the community, especially its land next to Lake Ontario. This gorgeous lakefront park has scenic picnic areas with covered areas and BBQ pits, and a stage for summer concerts. Lakeside Park and Tannery Park are two of Oakville's other great lakefront parks, sitting on both sides of the Sixteen Mile Creek that empties into Lake Ontario. Lakeside Park is a tranquil place with lots of green space and is even home to the town's first post office.
City Attractions
There is no shortage of interesting attractions in and around Oakville, with its delightful historic neighborhoods, and amazingly diverse eateries. Downtown Oakville is a vibrant focal point in central Oakville, where an eclectic mix of exotic foods can be found. Lots of art galleries, pubs, breweries, retail shopping centers, and historical landmarks attract legions of people throughout the year. Speaking of landmarks, there are several houses that operate as museums that are worth checking out when you book an RV rental in Oakville. The Merrick Thomas Farm House and the Sovereign House, which houses the Bronte Historical Society, are two fabulous stops to make while in the area. A lot can be learned by these living museums, with old artifacts and original furniture on display. The Oakville Museum is yet another historic house with a wealth of informative exhibits inside. The house once belonged to the Chisholm family, some of the original founders of Oakville. There are also lots of antique furniture and old dresses to be seen at the Oakville Museum.
