Horsetooth Reservoir can be found in northern Colorado near the cities of Fort Collins, Greeley, and an hour drives north from Denver. The reservoir was constructed in 1949 and was mainly built to collect snowmelt as a secondary water supply for the cities of Fort Collins and Greeley. Horsetooth Reservoir lies on the eastern fringe of the Rocky Mountains, offering a picturesque mountain retreat for anyone with an RV rental. Although recreational was not the first thing in mind when the dam and reservoir were built, Horsetooth Reservoir has slowly grown into one of Colorado’s premier recreational lakes. Once you have landed your fill of rainbow trout, get out onto or into the water. Horsetooth Reservoir has several designated swimming areas and beaches, perfect for cooling down on a summer day. Boaters can also take advantage of the no speed or horsepower limit on the Horsetooth Reservoir - jet around on a speedboat or pontoon boat. Launching your boat is easy enough, the reservoir has several concrete boat ramps, two of which are in the Horsetooth State Park and Lory State Park. The campground offers full hookups, and these include 20, 30, 50 amp electric, water, and sewage hookup. Facilities include a dump station, shower block, picnic tables, and on-site marina. Pets are welcome on-site but must be kept on a leash at all times.

Full hookups are again provided here, including water, sewage, and electrical hookup. Campsite facilities include a dump station, laundrette, flushing toilets, and a shower block. The city of Fort Collins, which is a stone throw away from the shores of Horsetooth Reservoir, is a perfect place to explore and spend a day or two sightseeing. ‘Fort Collins Museum of Discovery’ is a must-visit when in the city. The museum is home to a wide range of exhibitions, each one showcasing a unique subject matter involving the world of science and history. Exhibits include the ‘Music & Sound Lab’ - this exhibit displays the science behind sound and the technology behind everything from Edison wax cylinders to iPods. This museum will both entertain and educate, keeping you engaged throughout the whole self-guided tour of the building.
Colorado’s capital, Denver, is only an hour’s drive south from Horsetooth Reservoir, and well worth a visit for anyone willing to make the journey. The city’s star attraction is the Red Rock Amphitheatre, which was carved out of a sandstone cliff in 1906. There are several different ways to experience this alfresco amphitheater, including the nation-famous ‘Red Rocks’ concerts, where a number of well-known local and regional artists put on an unforgettable show. For a truly spectacular experience, pop by just before sunrise for a yoga class like no other, to witness breathtaking views from atop of the amphitheater.
