Located on the banks of the Ogeechee River is Fort Mcallister State Park, just south of the city of Savannah, GA. Surrounded by the giant, live oaks, and salt marshes, this state park is the perfect place to take part in a range of recreational activities. The park covers 1725 acres, with some points reaching down to the Atlantic Ocean and neighboring towns of Richmond Hill and Hinesville.

There is a huge picnic area, which offers stunning views of the river and surrounding landscape, as well as opportunities for fishing, boating, hiking, bird watching, and more. The main reason that people rent an RV in Bryan County, however, is to get a glimpse of the fort itself.

Getting Outdoors

Pack your hiking boots, as there is plenty to explore at Fort Mcallister State Park on foot. The four miles of trails are scenic and varied, allowing you to see many areas of the landscape. A favorite trail for those that are state park RV camping is the Redbird Creek Trail. This trail takes you through lush open land. Another option for those that would prefer a shorter journey is Magnolia Trail, which will take you past the waters and through a diverse landscape.

The river that runs through Fort Mcallister State Park is the ideal place to take your boat. The Ogeechee River gently winds its way through the landscape, so you could simply sit back and watch the park flow around you while you float. If you don't have your vessel, you can rent canoes and kayaks from the park, and there are also a couple of boat launches that are available to be used. There is a 150-foot-long fishing pier, which is great for keen anglers, and visitors can choose to either head out on their own or take one of the charter fishing trips.

You can't go camping at Fort Mcallister State Park without taking a fort tour. Guide yourself around the restored earthwork fort and observe the cannons, barracks, and palisades up close. It is the best-preserved earth fortification in the south, and many people rent a camper near Fort Mcallister State Park just to take a look at it and learn more about it. Historical programs are available throughout the year, as well as tours about the nature and history of the park.

There is a large state park RV campground located in Fort Mcallister State Park, which has 67 tents, trailer, and RV campsites available for visitors. There are also two backcountry campsites and a few cottages that you can rent. Staying in the park means you have instant access to all of the recreational activities within the park from the minute you wake up in the morning, beating the crowds.

For those that want a more resort-like camping experience, another good place stay is at Savannah South KOA. There are plenty of spacious pull-thru and back-in sites available, shaded by beautiful trees and right on the lakefront. The sparkling pool will help to cook you down during the warmer months and will certainly keep the kids entertained for a while. There is also a private fishing lake, rental boats, and even hand raised swans.

Exploring the Area

As Fort Mcallister State Park is located very close to the city of Savannah, you will be spoiled when it comes to looking for things to do in the area. Savannah campers can visit the very popular Botanical Gardens in the city with ease. There are both formal and naturalistic gardens to be found here, and with each passing season, there is something new to see. The gardens are also home to a beautifully scenic 2-acre pond, a few nature trails, amphitheater, archaeological exhibit, and the historic Reinhard House.

Learn all about Georgia's diverse marine life at the UGA Aquarium, located on Skidaway Island. It is the state's first saltwater aquarium, featuring 16 large exhibition tanks, home to a huge range of creatures. Most of the animals that live in the aquarium have been caught by staff right off the coast. After looking around the exhibits, take the time to still across the boardwalk over the salt marshes.

You can learn more about the area by paying a visit to the Pin Point Heritage Museum. The museum is housed in an old oyster and crab factory and features exciting exhibits, multimedia presentations, and some stunning views of the marsh. A visit here is your chance to experience the Gullah/Geechee culture firsthand and discover what the land was used for through history.
