Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge is a 2,762 acres destination for outdoor lovers near Riceboro in Southern Georgia. It lies in McIntosh County, approximately 45 miles away from Savannah. Marshes, woodlands, wetlands, and grasslands offer a safe habitat for Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge birds and animals. The most notable features of the refuge are its six artificial ponds.

Herons, barn swallow, mallards, cooper’s hawk, egrets, pileated woodpecker, painted bunting, and teal are some of the birds spotted here.

For anglers, fishing is a popular activity in the creeks and rivers bordering the refuge. Harris Neck Creek and Barbour River are the most prominent fishing spot in the area. For ease of access, Harris Neck Creek has two fishing piers. The most common species caught here include bass, catfish, and bluegill.

Camping at Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge

There are no camping options in Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge, but campers will find plenty of RV-friendly campgrounds in neighboring towns of Townsend and Savannah to camp in their motorhome rentals.

Exploring the Area

In addition to exploring Harris Neck National Wildlife Refuge in a motorhome rental, spare some time to tour the surrounding attractions. This region is rich in family-friendly activities and outdoor opportunities. Whether you are interested in learning local history, nature viewing opportunities, or a place to relax, you will be spoilt for choice. If you are into history, drive your RV rental to Wormsloe Historic Site. Located approximately an hour’s drive away, this served as Noble Jones estate during the colonial era. Also referred to as Wormsloe Plantation, this site occupies 500 acres. While this site has many attractions, what makes it special is Wormsloe’s tabby ruin. Considered as one of the oldest buildings in the town, this is an excellent example of 18th-century architecture. There are nature trails scattered throughout the museum grounds.

It has a wealth of artifacts and bills itself as one of the oldest museums in the area. It features three structures, namely Jepson Center, Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters, and Telfair Academy. Each building specializes in different types of artifacts. The most notable exhibits include paintings, photography, and sculptures.

Should you be a nature buff, you`ll want to drive your RV rental to Coastal Georgia Botanical Gardens at the Historic Bamboo Farm approximately 35 miles away. Spanning 51 acres, this is a beautiful ornamental garden featuring native and rare plants. After you are done with your adventures, take your family to Forsyth Park to relax. Encompassing 30 acres, you can find tons of fun activities here. There are many sports courts, playgrounds, picnic areas, and gardens to keep everyone busy and entertained.
