Discover Hunting Island State Park

Introduction

Wake up to the smell of the ocean and go to sleep to the sound of the waves while camping at Hunting Island State Park. Tucked in the South Carolina lowcountry, it remains the state’s most popular park for many reasons. More than a million people visit the 5,000 acres of beaches, marshes and maritime forests. Driftwood from island erosion decorates parts of the five-mile stretch of beaches, which provides a unique twist. The park offers all you need for a fun stay in your RV rental. Some campsites are just a short distance from the water.

Like many other parks in South Carolina, Hunting Island State Park was developed as a part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal Program, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The program focused on employing people during the Great Depression while promoting conservation and recreation.

Getting Outdoors

There are endless activities for families at the park. A picnic shelter serves well for gatherings. The playground will keep the kids occupied. The park also offers exciting summer programming, ranging from movie nights to guided hikes on one of the parks many trails. Volleyballs can be checked out at the park store for a fun pick-up beach volleyball match.

Bird watching opportunities also draw many Hunting Island campers because of the variety of native and migratory species in the park. The loggerhead turtles that nest during the summer months are another unique feature of the beach. You might also spot an alligator or diamondback rattlesnake. You’ll definitely see the resident deer and raccoons. Take a soothing walk on the pier for a stunning view of the Atlantic. After all the daytime fun, sit on the beach at night for arguably the best view of the stars in the state. There is so little light pollution that, during some parts of the year, even the Milky Way is visible.

Fishing is one of the visitors’ favorite activities while camping at the park. There are plenty of options. Enjoy surf fishing on the beach, off the pier, or in the nearby Johnson Creek and lagoon. You can stock up your RV rental with all your fishing bait, supplies, and equipment from the park store in the campground. The park’s nature center even loans out rods and reels.

Climb the 167 cast-iron steps to the top of the historic lighthouse built in 1859. It’s the only lighthouse in the state that’s accessible to the public. Catch your breath at the top of the lighthouse 130 feet above the ground, and enjoy the panoramic view of the Atlantic Ocean and the coast. It’s open all year.

Camping at Hunting Island State Park

Hunting Island State Park provides year-round fun for both experienced and amateur RV campers. The 100-site campground is located at the northern part of the park. Many sites are very close to the beach. Several spaces fit RVs up to 40 feet and some up to 28 feet. All sites are equipped with water and electrical hookups. Sites also have a picnic table, fire ring and enough space to make delicious campfire meals. Two of the sites are handicap accessible.

There are four restrooms and showers for visitors. The roads are paved and easy to maneuver. Pup lovers will be thrilled to know that the beach is dog-friendly. Fido is allowed in most areas of the park, provided he stays on his leash. Another perk that not every park can boast is the complimentary wifi throughout the entire campground. Just remember more than a million people visit the park every year, so you’ll want to plan your Hunting Island State Park RV camping adventure ahead of time.

Exploring the Area

Hunting Island is hardly a thriving metropolis. The seclusion is one of the best parts about the park. But there are still plenty of adventures to be had! Go on an equestrian tour nearby or rent a paddleboard or kayak for the day. You can find a few restaurants within a mile of the state park and several more within 10 miles. You will, of course, want to get some fresh seafood before you leave. Grab a cup of coffee for the road at a local java shop.

Check out historic downtown Beaufort 30 minutes away. Stroll through the waterfront park, visit the local boutiques and take your pick from the variety of restaurants. The military town is also home to some particularly interesting places, such as the kazoo factory, art council, and literary center. If you’re feeling up for a longer trek, Hilton Head Island and Savannah, Georgia are both just a bit over an hour south.
