Hillsdale County Park is a neighborhood family park in North Charleston with playgrounds built on white sand and areas where you can enjoy a picnic. The park is a perfect spot for families and visitors can use the park as a starting point for exploring North Charleston. There are also several nearby attractions, such as an indoor ice skating rink.

Getting Outdoors

Magnolia Plantation and Gardens is a botanical garden that is open to the public year-round. The garden has attractions such as the family mansion that was built near Summerville before the American Revolution and then floated downstream to its present location after the Civil War. It also has a nature tram that starts from the main parking lot and takes you on a scenic tour of the plantation. On the tour, you will pass through forests, wetlands, and marshes, and past lakes, observing alligators, turtles, herons, and other resident wildlife.

Head 30 minutes' drive northeast in the camper rental and spend some time exploring Francis Marion National Forest. It serves as a refuge for a wide variety of wildlife, including some endangered species such as the red-cockaded woodpecker. The landscape is a combination of ecosystems; swamps, marshes, and stands of pine trees and cypress trees can be found, offering diverse vistas and encouraging the varieties of wildlife. The park is a multi-use natural resource and trees are selectively logged to maintain the forest and provide local communities with raw timber. There are numerous activities you can enjoy here. Hiking and mountain biking, canoeing and kayaking, and nature and wildlife viewing are popular pastimes in the forest.

Dungannon Plantation Heritage Preserve is a wildlife management area that provides refuge to wood storks, great egrets, great blue herons, and other bird species that reside here or pass through. It is also designated as an outdoor recreation area with hiking trails you can enjoy. It's a pet-friendly area to dogs on leashes and is open to the public year-round during daylight hours. There are no public facilities such as restrooms, but some of the trails are well marked; others are well-worn footpaths you can follow. Camping near Hillsdale Park

There aren't facilities for camping at Hillsdale Park, though there are several RV parks near Charleston. Mount Pleasant – Charleston KOA is a year-round RV campground with numerous attractions to make your stay pleasant. The campground is the starting point for a nature trail you can hike while observing the birds and other resident wildlife. The trail will take you to a nearby antebellum plantation, passing through stands of oak trees with Spanish moss on their trunks. If you'd rather relax and breathe in the scenery, a wagon will transport you and other guests to the plantation where one of Mount Pleasant's oldest surviving houses sits.

Fain's RV Park is a family-friendly RV campground in North Charleston. The park welcomes rigs big and small, offering back-in and pull-through campsites with full hookups, 30 and 50 amp electricity, restrooms with showers, and more. A dump station is on-site and the RV park is close to many local attractions.

Exploring the Area

Lots of small cities surround Charleston. Goose Creek has a rich history even though it was established in 1961. The city has a golf course, several wellness centers, and nightlife venues for you to choose from. If you want to dine out, Goose Creek has a long list of reasonably priced restaurants serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Several seafood venues are on hand but you'll also find barbecue joints and steakhouses, and Mexican, Japanese, and Italian restaurants.

Ladson is named after one of its original founding families. One of its important landmarks is Exchange Park, which serves as host for numerous concerts and other social activities. The town has an active nightlife and a long list of restaurants that includes a wine bar, seafood restaurants, and steakhouses. Most of the venues offer up American style cuisine but there are a few places where you'll find something different.
