Bethany is a village in Moultrie County, in the state of Illinois. The county was formed in 1843 with sections that were to be taken from neighboring counties Macon, Shelby, and Coles. Macon donated a strip of “worthless swamp” that later turned out to be highly fertile and valuable. Moultrie County was named after South Carolina General and Governor William Moultrie who fought the British at Sullivan's Island; he also designed the “Moultrie Flag” which flew over the fort at Sullivan's Island and later became an iconic symbol of liberty in the south. The flag is now the official flag of Moultrie County, Illinois.
