Wolf Creek is often paired with its sister park, Eagle Creek, when referring to the Eagle Creek State Recreation Area. They face each other and, together, make up 250 miles of shoreline along Lake Shelbyville. Wolf Creek is almost completely surrounded by the lake, which provides a lot of the major activities for parkgoers.

Getting Outdoors

Lake Shelbyville and its surrounding tributaries provide the perfect spot for fishing near Wolf Creek State Park. Anglers have plenty of places to set up and drop a line into the water. Bluegill, muskie, bullhead, carp, largemouth bass, and walleye are some of the most commonly caught fish in the lake.

Or, take your boat out for a cruise on the water. Boating at Wolf Creek State Park is easy with the four-lane launching ramp. Wolf Creek State Park campers without their own watercraft can rent boats on-site as well. The park also provides all the fishing and boating supplies you could ever need to get the most out of your day on the water.

No Wolf Creek State Park camping trip is complete without a good hike. Seven hiking trails weave through lush forested areas teeming with natural flora and fauna. If weather permits and you bring your snowmobile, explore the 16.5-mile snowmobile trail. There's also a nice 15-mile trail for horseback riding.

Camping at Wolf Creek State Park

Wolf Creek State Park gives its RV campers their choice of around 380 campsites to book. Of those sites, 300 are Class A and come equipped with the standard 30 and 50-amp electrical hookups in addition to water hookups. Seventy-eight sites are Class C and don't have any hookups. None of the sites are pull-through, and the largest motorhome rental the park can accommodate is 52 feet. The park also provides a dump station.

Restrooms and a shower building are located on the premises for guests' convenience. The park also has a playground to keep the kids entertained. Wolf Creek doesn’t provide Wi-Fi; however, most cell phone carriers get good reception here.

Exploring the Area

Looking to see what there is to do outside Wolf Creek State Park? Shelbyville is a short drive south of the park and is great for a day trip. The city has a family-friendly atmosphere, and there are always events taking place. Take the Shelbyville City Walk, which is a collection of four self-guided tours that let you discover the city and learn all about its rich history. Then, stop into any of the local restaurants for a nice dinner and maybe catch some live music to put a cap on the night.

Head north up to Decatur and discover the Scovill Zoo. Connected to Lake Decatur, this zoo has over 400 animals from six different continents all in one place. See armadillos, primates, and pigs. You can also see some little arthropods like the hissing cockroach, Emperor scorpion, or a tarantula. The zoo also offers a carousel, a playground, and tons of interactive educational exhibits for the kids to learn all about all the wonderful creatures that roam the world. This place is sure to provide a day of fun for the whole family.

Take a short trip south to the town of Effingham. There's so much to do here! Visit any of the many historical and cultural museums that Effingham has to offer. Stop by a winery or brewery and see how some of your favorite drinks are made. Looking to do some shopping? You'll find a variety of thrift stores and antique shops to peruse and find some terrific treasures. The art studios, galleries, and statues around town show off the local artistic talent. And when night time comes, catch some live music at a bar or club downtown. There's never a dull moment in Effingham.

When your trip has come to an end and it is time to get back on the road, make sure to fill up the tank of your camper rental at any of the gas stations within a 30-minute drive of the park. The lake is surrounded by them, so you should have no problem. Get some pizza, Chinese, or diner food down in Shelbyville, and then it’s just you and the road. The next biggest city is Springfield, which is just under an hour and a half northwest of the park.
