Although officially recognized as a suburb of Chicago, this vibrant, relatively small community is a bustling social and economic hub all on its own. Acclaimed as one of America's safest and wealthiest midwestern cities, Naperville strikes the ideal balance between big city life and small town hospitality. Combine shopping expeditions with wilderness trips, explore the many attractions of the Windy City during the day and the neighborhood serenity of Naperville in the evening. The historic district of Naperville, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, encompasses most of the eastern side of town and is made up of more than 600 buildings dating from that period.

Lord's Park in Elgin, Illinois is a connection to history. The park has playgrounds, a swimming pool, a zoo, picnic areas, and a pavilion dating back to the 1800s. The park was the site for concerts and events in the 1800s, and the zoo dates back just as long. The bison are a connection to this history of the land. They used to roam freely in the tens of thousands over what is now Illinois. While few remain, it is nice to see that there are still some bison or buffalo still living here. The park provides tennis courts and soccer fields to play on, and picnic tables to sit and watch or enjoy your lunch. The park is a pleasant green space in the city, with a history going back centuries. Spend time in this park, and you will be doing exactly what generations of people have been enjoying doing, on this spot, in Elgin.
Burnidge/ Paul Wolff Forest Preserve in Elgin, Illinois is a beautiful, spacious campground that will make you forget that you are basically in an urban area. This is a natural campground and does not provide a lot of modern conveniences, but you are not more than a few miles from all amenities and services in town. The campground does accommodate large RVs and you will enjoy the incredible peace and quiet. The 600 or so acres here include walking and hiking trails. Stay on the trails or getting lost is a real possibility. Watch for wildlife, as the forest preserve is a natural habitat for deer, otters, hawks, and other forest creatures. The washrooms are clean and maintained. Sites are level asphalt and grass, with a dump station at the entrance to the campground. Sit quietly and listen to the birdsong of the forest. There is plenty of room for exploratory play for kids. Out here the forest is the playground!
Illinois Beach State Park just north of Waukegan, Illinois, is a campground with spacious sites! This state park has some dog-friendly hiking trails, and plenty of other walking and biking trails. The long beach areas on Lake Michigan have some sandy areas, and some areas perfect for rock collectors. Many of the rocks have crystals in them and are very smooth from the constant action of the waves. Most campsites have some shade, the washrooms are functional and shower houses have great water pressure. There is a hotel with a restaurant, so you can still eat if you don't feel like cooking. The sites are asphalt and there is a dumping station. The park is very close to the town of Zion, as well as not far from Waukegan, so you are never far from grocery stores or services, even though it may not feel like it as you listen to the waves lapping and the crickets chirping.
