Illinois Beach State Park just north of Waukegan, Illinois, is a campground with spacious sites! This state park has some dog-friendly hiking trails, and plenty of other walking and biking trails. The long beach areas on Lake Michigan have some sandy areas, and some areas perfect for rock collectors. Many of the rocks have crystals in them and are very smooth from the constant action of the waves. Most campsites have some shade, the washrooms are functional and shower houses have great water pressure. There is a hotel with a restaurant, so you can still eat if you don't feel like cooking. The sites are asphalt and there is a dumping station. The park is very close to the town of Zion, as well as not far from Waukegan, so you are never far from grocery stores or services, even though it may not feel like it as you listen to the waves lapping and the crickets chirping.

Lord's Park in Elgin, Illinois is a connection to history. The park has playgrounds, a swimming pool, a zoo, picnic areas, and a pavilion dating back to the 1800s. The park was the site for concerts and events in the 1800s, and the zoo dates back just as long. The bison are a connection to this history of the land. They used to roam freely in the tens of thousands over what is now Illinois. While few remain, it is nice to see that there are still some bison or buffalo still living here. The park provides tennis courts and soccer fields to play on, and picnic tables to sit and watch or enjoy your lunch. The park is a pleasant green space in the city, with a history going back centuries. Spend time in this park, and you will be doing exactly what generations of people have been enjoying doing, on this spot, in Elgin.
Emerald Trails Campground is a beautiful, relaxing outdoor paradise. A beautiful lake at the center of the campground is fully stocked with fish, and is visited by geese, swan and ducks, creating a perfect ambiance to unwind from your daily life. Enjoy swimming in the swimming pond, shooting some hoops on the court or racking a game of pool.
The Cedar Lake Bible Retreat & RV Park is open all year round and offers a peaceful and refreshing stay to visitors in the Hammond, Indiana, area. The campground has lots of trees, is very quiet and located on the grounds of a large Christian conference center on the shores of Cedar Lake. The camping sites are all gravel, and the are leveled to accommodate RVs. Each site includes a picnic table and fire ring, and full hookups including 30 and 50 amp electric, water, sewer, and free wifi. The park is right alongside the beautiful Cedar Lake, which is a great spot for fishing and swimming in summer, and there is good beach access. Firewood is available aplenty at the park, and pets must be walked on a leash. As might be expected at a Christian conference center, the campground is alcohol, drug and smoke free. While some may consider this a con, the flip side is that you're unlikely to be kept awake late at night by rowdy visitors. Altogether, Cedar Lake Bible Retreat & RV Park makes for a great outdoors beak away, with good access to Chicago.
The birthplace of Ernest Hemingway is a beautiful, restored home that has been converted into a museum. Come learn about Ernest Hemingway, the Nobel Prize winning author who was born in 1899, by visiting the home in which he spent his early life.
