Washington County State Recreation Area was purchased by the state of Illinois in 1959 and turned into a habitat for upland game. In 1960, the state created an artificial lake within the park and named it Washington County Lake. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing on the lake or the shoreline, or hiking the shoreline past stands of pine trees, brushy draws, and fallow fields. Hunting is allowed with rifle or crossbow, and camping is also an option here. It is a popular destination for picnicking.
