Pyramid State Park, also called Pyramid State Recreation Area, is located in southwest Illinois, near the small town of Pinckneyville. It is situated only about 30 miles east of the Mississippi River, which forms the state border with Missouri in that area. The nearest larger town is Du Quoin, which is found around 20 miles to the east. The nearest large city is St. Louis, MO, at about 75 miles to the northwest.

This rather forested park is one of the largest of its kind in the state. It is located on what used to be the property of a large, coal mining operation in the local area. It was actually named after that company. The hills that are seen around the park are actually old tailings piles from the former mine. All sorts of activities can be enjoyed here, from water sports on the many small lakes to hiking or bike riding trails, and camping and picnic spots.

The Mandala Gardens is located in nearby Marion. The prime draw at this attraction is the sculptures made of stone and the occasional labyrinth that are found throughout the park. Walking paths snake through these exhibits and highlight the various flowers and plants that are also found here. There are benches where people can meditate, or just sit and enjoy quiet moments of reflection.
