Davenport is a city in and the county seat of Scott County, Iowa; it was established in 1836 and named after a former English sailor, George Davenport, who fought for the U.S. Army in the War of 1812. Davenport is located on the Mississippi River and on the Iowa-Illinois border and is approximately halfway between Chicago and Des Moines. The city is home to Palmer College of Chiropractic where the practice was first begun and to a Class A minor-league baseball team, the Quad Cities River Bandits. It has been recognized several times for its livability, affordability, and concentration of high-tech jobs. The city hosts several music festivals each year, such as the Mississippi Valley Blues Festival, the Mississippi Valley Fair, and the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Festival. The Bix Beiderbecke Festival includes an internationally known foot race, the Bix 7, as part of its celebration.
