The legendary Fort Knox is both a United States Army outpost, and a census-designated town south of Louisville in the state of Kentucky. The base is one of the most strategically important sites in the country and was built during the Civil War in 1861. The site has always been home to armored divisions and the U.S. Army Armor School where troops go to learn how to operate tanks and other armored vehicles. The fort was named for Henry Knox, the Chief of Artillery for the Continental Army during the American Revolution.
This unique military town is situated on the banks of the Ohio River, and only minutes from both Louisville and the Indiana-Kentucky state line. Interstate 65 is right outside of town and carries traffic north to Indianapolis and Chicago, and to the south past Nashville, Tennessee. For a vacation on the road less traveled, book an RV in Fort Knox and have the time of your life exploring the region’s cities and nature areas.
Partly due to the presence of the troops at Fort Knox and their families, there are several great outdoor facilities and public spaces in town. Cornwell Field, Turret Field, and Kilianski Sports Complex, for instance, have a collection of baseball diamonds and large grassy fields for friendly sports competitions. Heard Park is known for its outdoor scenery and fitness trails. Thorne Park too has some great picnic areas and walking paths for all to use. Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area is well-loved by people living in Fort Knox, and a great place to head when you rent an RV. The park is named for Otter Creek which runs through it, eventually emptying into the Ohio River which divides Indiana and Kentucky from one another. In addition to the archery range, shooting range, and disc golf course, you’ll find cabins and mountain biking trails here. This park is also home to Morgan’s Cave, a limestone cavern used as a base by the Confederate Morgan’s Raiders during the Civil War.
Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is south of Louisville and contains delightful nature paths that wind through an impressive array of rare trees. The visitor center ensures visitors know what they are looking at and walking amongst so they can better understand the ecosystem that is being cultivated at the research forest. Drive your Fort Knox motorhome rental to Knobs State Forest and you’ll find an off-roading mecca, with over a thousand acres of mud tracks and ATV trails to race around the woods. Taylorsville Lake State Park is located halfway to Frankfort, the state capital, and features the most heavily stocked fishing lake in the entire commonwealth of Kentucky. The boat ramps are great for boat owners to put their watercraft in the water, and the campground is perfectly suitable for you and your Fort Knox camper rental.
Hoosier National Forest can be found by driving to southern Indiana, just over the state line. This glorious national forest is home to hundreds of caves and Indiana’s only wilderness areas where motorized vehicles are forbidden. There are however many places to camp inside the forest with your Fort Knox RV rental, and even more places to hike on one of the hundreds of trails that permeate the park. Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area to the south near Tennessee is a well-known recreation area that attracts millions of people each year, but Mammoth National Park is by far the most impressive natural feature in the Bluegrass State. Choose one of the Fort Knox RV rentals by owner and head to Kentucky’s only national park, you can see the longest cave system on the planet. This world heritage site has an astounding four hundred miles of subterranean passageways, many of which can be explored by brave park guests.

Given its proud military history, it’s no surprise that there are a number of military-related attractions to explore once you choose an RV rental near Fort Knox. The Kentucky September 11th Memorial is a sobering and solemn reminder of the tragic events that occurred in 2001 that forever changed the United States. This beautiful memorial pays tribute to the lives that were lost on that day with a tasteful display and monument.
The Patton Museum of Cavalry and Armor pays tribute to one of the greatest commanders in American history. Patton is considered a folk hero for liberating Europe, and much of the artillery and armored vehicles on display at the museum date from World War II. Fort Knox Water Park, on the other hand, offers a nice change of pace away from military history and gives families a nice opportunity to cool off and spend some quality vacation time together. The pool and waterslides are a big hit with children.
But the main feature the town is known for is something you technically cannot get too close to. The United States Bullion Depository houses over a hundred billion dollars’ worth of gold. Unfortunately, but perhaps not suprisingly, visitors are not allowed inside.
