The legendary Fort Knox is both a United States Army outpost, and a census-designated town south of Louisville in the state of Kentucky. The base is one of the most strategically important sites in the country and was built during the Civil War in 1861. The site has always been home to armored divisions and the U.S. Army Armor School where troops go to learn how to operate tanks and other armored vehicles. The fort was named for Henry Knox, the Chief of Artillery for the Continental Army during the American Revolution.
