Nolin Lake State Park is located in southern Kentucky and spans over 333 acres. It was created in 2001 and is iconic for being home to the massive Nolin Lake. This park is situated next to Nolin River and Green River and features plenty of beautiful outdoor landscapes, such as beaches and waterfalls.

This state park is near various cities, such as Morgantown and Bowling Green, and is a short drive away from Mammoth Cave National Park. Because of its large lake, it’s a popular spot in the state for boating and fishing.

Getting Outdoors

You’ll find many outdoor activities to do while staying at Nolin Lake State Park. Head out to Nolin Lake to go boating or fishing. This lake spans 5,796 acres and is filled with many different types of fish, such as bass, catfish, and crappies. There are a few launches located around the lake and a sand beach where you’ll be able to have a picnic or just enjoy the surrounding view.

Another thing to do while at Nolin Lake State Park is birdwatching. Visitors can grab their camera or binoculars and trek through the forest to try to catch a glimpse of native species. This includes Kentucky warblers, sandhill cranes, hawks, and hummingbirds.

The park is also filled with over ten miles of trails. Each of these trails varies in their landscapes and elevations and are part of the Brier Creek Trail System. Two trails to try out are the Omega Loop Trail, which runs two miles long through the woods, and the Point Loop Trail, which is two miles long and will take you by Nolin Lake.

Camping at Nolin Lake State Park

Book an RV in Edmonson County and stay at the campground at Nolin Lake State Park during your outdoor adventure. Its RV campground has 59 campsites. About 32 of these sites feature amenities such as water, restrooms, electric, laundry, and a dump station. The remaining 27 sites are primitive. In addition to these, there is a small playground nearby, and ADA-accessible sites are available.

The campground is only open from late March to late October and reservations are usually required. Many of the camper sites have views of Nolin Lake and are near a park ranger’s station and small gift shop. Keep in mind that the campground at Nolin Lake State Park does not allow firewood to be brought into the park as a way to help prevent wildfires. Pets are allowed to stay at the campground as long as they are on a leash and looked after.

Exploring the Area

There are quite a few places to visit with your motorhome while visiting the area. A quick drive away from the park is Mammoth Cave National Park. Considered to be one of the largest cave systems in the world, the cave covers over 400 miles that are filled with unique geological formations and wildlife, such as the cave crayfish. Besides exploring underground, the national park also features numerous hiking/biking trails outdoors as well as canoe rentals which can be taken out on the nearby Green River. If you plan to visit with kids, there is a special program where they can collect trading cards that tell of the history of the park and surrounding area.

About an hour away from Nolin Lake State Park in Bowling Green is the National Corvette Museum. The museum highlights everything about this sports car, such as exhibits that include photos of its early construction and historic car pieces. In addition to this, visitors will also discover vintage models parked inside, many of which are from the 1950s. After taking a tour of the museum, visitors can stop by its Motorsports Park which lets you take a thrilling ride in a Corvette around a racetrack.

One could also head over to Cave City with your travel trailer to check out Froggetts Guntown Mountain. This town was created in the 1960s as a way to pay tribute to the Old Wild West. It includes many highlights, including costumed interpreters, a haunted hotel, a blacklight golf course, and an escape room. Visitors could also stop by its Old Tyme Photo room where they can dress up in old costumes and have a photo of them taken.

There are a handful of gas stations located near Nolin Lake State Park, so if you need to quickly fill up your RV’s tank, you’ll be able to do so without worries. You’ll also find many cafes and restaurants to grab a bite to eat at, many of which sell local favorites like hush puppies and barbecue. You could also try some juicy blackberries during the summer which are the official state berry.
