The small suburban town of Luling can be found between New Orleans and Baton Rouge, the state capital of Louisiana. The town was known as many different names throughout its existence, like St. Denis, Cajun Town, Old Town, and Gassenville, before residents settled on Luling, the name of a German cotton merchant who lived in the area. During its early years, Luling mostly consisted of sugar and cotton plantations, relying heavily on its agriculture industry. The various plantations have gone on to lend their names to the many historic neighborhoods in Luling, like Ellington and Davis Plantations respectively.

When you book an RV in Luling, there is much to do and see within reach of the charming town. The Gulf Coast is easy to reach when you rent an RV and is a popular destination for millions of visitors each year. Visiting New Orleans is also an option as the infamous city is only a 10-minute drive east in your Luling RV rental.

One of the most notable characteristics of this area is the unique Cajun culture unlike anything else in the world. The language, vibrant colors, music, and especially the mouth-watering Cajun food is a delight to all that visit. Another integral part of the culture is the love of celebrating and throwing massive parties, like the annual Mardi Gras celebration that is known as one of the most legendary parties in the world. Luling also hosts events like the Alligator Festival, the Battle for the Paddle Jambalaya Cookoff, and the annual Krewe of Lul Parade that takes place one week before Mardi Gras.

Discover Luling

Explore the Outdoors

Aside from a handful of small parks, there are not too many places to enjoy the great outdoors in Luling, which would be a problem if it weren’t located in southern Louisiana where gorgeous natural beauty is on display everywhere you look. Westbank Bridge Park sits in the shadow of the bridge itself and gives people a nice wide-open space to get some fresh air and perhaps take their pets for a walk. The park is mostly used for baseball as there are several baseball diamonds located under the bridge. Rathborne Park and Lagattuta Park are the other two major parks in town.

It wouldn't be entirely truthful to say that Luling is devoid of outdoor nature spaces, because part of the Salvador Wildlife Management Areas can be found in the southeast corner of town. This lovely park is primarily used for hunting, fishing, and boating in the brackish bayous that the state is known for. Timken Wildlife Management Area is right next to Salvador and also located next to Lake Salvador and Lake Cataouatche. Bayou Sauvage National Wildlife Refuge is a great place to take your Luling camper rental. On the other side of New Orleans, this enormous refuge is home to alligators, snakes, rabbits, and endangered species like the brown pelican. Wooden boardwalks carve through the swamplands to give guests a platform to stand on while they observe the rare migratory birds that rest along their journey. Bogue Chitto National Wildlife Refuge is similar to Bayou Sauvage, with many instances of rare wildlife on display.

De Soto National Forest is close to Gulfport and Biloxi in Mississippi and is a great place to take your Luling motorhome rental if you have the time, as it is the closest national forest to town. Half a million acres of one of the country’s most important biospheres can be explored at De Soto, as well as several long-distance trails. A fun bonus site to check out: Poverty Point near Epps, Louisiana. This 900-acre site is riddled with prehistoric earthwork structures and fascinating archeological finds from a civilization that lived in North America for thousands of years.

City Sightseeing

Luling is mostly too small to have any noteworthy attractions of its own aside from a few plantations, but luckily New Orleans is only minutes away. The Destrehan Plantation is one of the many local plantations that has been restored and preserved to educate people about the past. This particular plantation is the oldest in the Lower Mississippi Valley, built in 1787.

In New Orleans, there is so much to do, it will have your head spinning. The world-class cuisine mentioned before will occupy most of your time, with extraordinary jambalaya, po’ boy sandwiches, beignets, and other Cajun classics. The French Quarter is one of the most notable historic areas in any city in the country. This spectacular party destination is the epicenter of Mardi Gras, and also the birthplace of jazz music. Often times you can see second line jazz bands marching down the streets with impromptu parades.

The New Orleans Museum of Art is a fantastic institution that started in 1912 with 13 pieces of artwork. The museum now boasts a collection of over 40,000 paintings, sculptures, and other works of art. For history lovers, the National WWII Museum is a sobering reminder of the horrors of war. This fascinating museum is one of the best on the planet, with extreme attention to detail and engaging exhibits.
