Lexington Park Campground

Waterfront camping near Lexington puts you close to the start of the 100-mile Tip of the Thumb Heritage Water Trail on Lake Huron. From Lexington, you canoe south to north until you round Michigan’s "tip of the thumb" at Port Austin and then continue down the other side of the thumb to the southern shore of Saginaw Bay. Rugged stretches of the coast from Lexington to White Rock Park dominate the view, while mostly sandy shores welcome you when you arrive at Port Austin. Kayak a section of the trail and go back to your campsite at Lexington Park Campground, or complete the entire length of the trail for an opportunity to land on isolated beaches, and make the most of the campsites and rest areas spaced out along the shore. For shipwreck divers, the best reason to book an RV rental in Sanilac County is located just offshore. Michigan's eastern shoreline from Lexington up to Forestville proved perilous to many ships navigating Lake Huron's waters. Safe harbors were hard to find, and storms regularly occurred along this stretch of Lake Huron, resulting in several maritime catastrophes over the years. The shipwrecks that littered the coast make up the Sanilac Shores Underwater Preserve, with 16 of them visible above 120 feet. Some of the more notable wrecks with their hulls and their navigational equipment relatively intact are the 1856 wooden steamer New York , the 1873 tugboat Sport , and the 1864 cargo carrier Colonel A.B. Williams . On land, Sanilac County boasts another collection of artifacts from as back as the Late Woodland Era. Native American Indians who occupied the area now known as the Michigan Thumb etched into sandstone slabs a collection of birds and other animal figures, leaving behind a cache of petroglyphs that Michigan is rightly proud of. The petroglyphs are surrounded by the lush and peaceful woodlands of the Sanilac Petroglyphs Historic State Park in Cass City. They can be seen along a mile-long self-guided trail that also takes you to clues of a Chippewa village and remnants of a 19th-century logging camp.
