Columbus Lake is a lake that sits in both Lowndes and Clay Counties in northeast Mississippi. The lake, impounded by the John C. Stennis Lock and Dam, is a reservoir on the Tennessee-Tombigbee waterway. Stennis was a well-regarded US senator from Mississippi, and the dam is named in his honor. Similarly, Lowndes County is named for US congressman William J. Lowndes, and Clay County is named for Kentucky senator Henry Clay.

Columbus Lake is central to the history of Mississippi, and history buffs can find several interesting attractions. Waverley Mansion is in West Point, MS, just a few miles northwest of Columbus Lake. The mansion is an antebellum plantation home. The house has been restored and refurnished with period-correct furnishings. Mississippi campers can visit the mansion by road, or they can travel by boat via the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway. The mansion is listed on the Civil War Trail and the National Register of Historic Buildings.
