JP Coleman State Park is a state park located near Iuka, MS in Tishomingo County. Named for J.P Coleman, a former governor of the state, the park is located on the Tennessee River and Pickwick Lake. This state park is fairly remote and surrounded by unspoiled wilderness. Outdoors enthusiasts can hike, hunt, and fish while out on an adventure.

Tishomingo County has a humid, subtropical climate. That means the summers can be very hot with a lot of humidity. The winters tend to be very moderate. Snowfall is uncommon, but precipitation is common year-round. Mississippi is warmer on average than even other humid, subtropical climates farther north.

Florence, AL is less than an hour away, Jackson, TN, is around 90 minutes away, and Tupelo, MS is about an hour away. JP Coleman State Park offers several different outdoors activities that outdoor lovers might enjoy. Many of the activities take place on or around the water. Pickwick Lake is a 47,500-acre freshwater lake. Watersport fans can fish, boat, and water ski on the lake.

Pickwick Lake is stocked with bass, catfish, bream, and crappie. Fishermen have reported catching largemouth bass over ten pounds and smallmouth bass around seven pounds. These are just a few of the different types of fish that can be caught in the lake.

In addition to fishing from the shore, outdoors lovers can launch a boat into the lake. The park features a marina for docking a boat as well. On land, Mississippi campers can find picnic tables, picnic pavilions, grills, playgrounds, and miniature golf.

JP Coleman State Park also offers different seasonal events such as a Halloween festival, frequent bass fishing competitions, and birdhouse building classes.

Camping at JP Coleman State Park

JP Coleman State Park offers two different types of RV camping, developed sites and primitive sites. There are 69 developed campsites, all of which are paved. The campsites offer grills and picnic tables. Each site has sewer, water, and electrical hookups. Eleven of the paved campsites are waterfront, and these are considered the premium sites. The rest are in wooded areas. These paved campsites can be reserved in advance. Most of the sites are reserved for short-term stays, but a few of them can be rented monthly.

There are nine primitive campsites near Indian Creek. Outdoor lovers who are primitive camping with an RV can dump their sewage at a dump station. The park also offers a laundry facility and a bathhouse with showers.

Exploring The Area

JP Coleman State Park is mere minutes away from the Tennessee and Alabama borders. As such, many nearby attractions are in southwestern Tennessee and northwestern Alabama. Shiloh National Military Park in Shiloh honors the site of the famous Battle of Shiloh from the American Civil War. The park contains the cemetery for the soldiers, the battlefield itself, and several exhibits explaining the significance of the battle. History buffs searching for RV rentals near Shiloh might consider visiting this park.

Corinth Civil War Interpretive Center in Corinth, MS is frequently visited alongside Shiloh. The center features videos and exhibits designed to inform about the Battle of Corinth. The battle was a siege of the city and considered a pivotal battle in Mississippi military history.
