Camping at Big Hill Pond State Park

Around an hour and a half away, Florence, AL, offers campers a wide range of day trips and sight-seeing opportunities that can be enjoyed by the entire family. At over 43 feet tall, this ancient mound towers over the surrounding landscape. Highlights of the museum include Native American fish hooks sharpened from deer hoof and necklaces carved from river bottom shells.

Another must-see museum in Florence is the Pope’s Tavern Museum, which tells of the trials and tribulations the city faced during the Civil War. The museum displays a myriad of artifacts, each telling its own unique story about the war and the role Florence played in it. Highlights include a rare Kennedy Long Rifle, a Confederate Colonel's uniform, and a vertically strung piano - one of only four ever made.

The Alabama town of Red Bay is also a little further south from Big Hill Pond State Park, but Red Bay Water Park in the city is simply a must-visit for campers with small children. The park is home to a large swimming pool which can be enjoyed by both strong and weaker swimmers. The water park also has many diving boards, water slides, and pool water fountains.
