Tupelo National Battlefield offers a unique chance to retrace the footsteps of American Civil War troops. As you explore the historic battlefield, you'll be transported back to July 1864, when Union forces marched into Tupelo to confront Confederate soldiers. The conflict became known as the Battle of Harrisburg and saw more than 20,000 soldiers go head to head. While neither emerged victorious and more than 2,000 lives were lost, the Federals were successful in protecting Union railroads from the Confederates. Today, the battle is honored with a one-acre memorial site in the heart of Downtown Tupelo.
