When you book an RV in Gretna you can explore the Omaha and Council Bluffs region with all the comforts of home and without the hassle of staying in a hotel in the city. Gretna may be small, but don’t write this little town off as a minor suburb or a one-horse town out in the country. The town was founded in the late 1800s when the Burlington Railroad built a connection between Omaha and Ashland. As a more modern railroad town, the streets were laid out on an orderly grid and paved with cobblestones, a feature that makes it a charming community to visit.
Chalco Hill Recreation Area is one of the most popular places for outdoor recreation. The nearly 1,200-acre park is just a few miles to the east of town and has several running paths, picnic tables, a soccer field, and a large artificial lake for fishing. When the weather is right, the park is also used for launching hot air balloons; it’s a magical experience just to watch them take flight.
Just a few miles out of town, Zorinsky Lake and Recreation Area is another great place to enjoy some fresh air and a few hours in the sun when you rent an RV in Gretna. The lake has decent fishing and the trails around it are popular with joggers and those looking for a sunset stroll.
If you’re interested in taking a day trip with your Gretna motorhome rental, Homestead National Monument is only 85 miles away. The monument commemorates the Homestead Act, signed in 1862 by President Lincoln, which opened up the west to settlers willing to move to far away places and work the land. Unlike many national monuments, Homestead is not centered around any visible natural feature, but rather sits on some of the first few acres that were claimed under the new land policy. The visitors center has vast amounts of information and educational programming for anyone interested in this piece of American history.
Traveling through eastern Nebraska with your Gretna RV rental is easy as there are a number of RV parks with easy access to the highway and all the attractions in the area.
West Omaha / NE Lincoln KOA is close to Gretna and also has a variety of amenities. Like many KOA parks it has a pool open during the summer months, full hookups for your Gretna RV trailer rental, bike rentals, and a mini-golf course. Being just four miles south of town, this could be your decent place to camp with your RV rental near Gretna.
Pine Grove RV Park in Greenwood is a bit farther away but could be a good choice if you’re hoping to spend time in the nearby state capital of Lincoln. Sites have easy access to Interstate 80 and there’s a fitness room and recreational facilities (tennis, volleyball, and horseshoes) to enjoy.
You may also be able to park the Gretna RV rental at Walmart, a few miles northeast of town, just off Interstate 80. Be sure to call store management ahead of time to confirm your stay.
One of the best things about getting a camper rental in Gretna, NE, is that you have such easy access to Omaha, but there are still plenty of great attractions worth visiting without ever leaving the city limits. If you rent an RV here in the fall, you should make a stop at Vala’s Pumpkin Patch. While it began as a place to pick up some yearly Halloween décor, it has expanded into a family-friendly entertainment complex complete with games, pony rides, and plenty of delicious treats. It’s located just a few miles from downtown Greta.
You probably wouldn’t guess it, but eastern Nebraska is also home to one of the largest collections of nuclear-capable aircraft and missiles. The Strategic Air Command at nearby Offutt Air Force Base directed the operations of much of America’s nuclear forces during the Cold War. Today, the Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum in Ashland showcases the machinery and complicated systems used in the country’s arms race against the Soviets to retain nuclear superiority.
To find some peace after visiting such a site, make a stop at the Holy Family Shrine, a beautiful four-story glass-walled church, just off of Interstate 80. Even if you’re not Catholic or religious at all, the church’s tranquility and fascinating architecture still make it a must-see attraction.
While the best shopping will probably be found in nearby Omaha, if you’re looking for a deal, the area’s outlet mall is definitely worth checking out. The outdoor shopping center has dozens of name brand stores.
