If you’re a fan of spectacular landscapes, make your way to Pyramid Lake in western Nevada. Covering a whopping 1,25,000 acres, it's one of the largest natural lakes in the state. Pyramid Lake is surrounded by sagebrush flat, scattered tufa formations, and mountains in the distance, making for a very scenic landscape. Camping with an RV in the area gives you access to a range of recreational activities so book an RV in Washoe County to explore the lake and its surrounding areas while you are out on an outdoor adventure. As a part of the Pyramid Lake Indian Reservation, a Paiute preserve that is inhabited by Paiute tribespeople, you also get to check out the tribe’s history and way of life when you visit the lake.

Located about 40 miles from the city of Reno and 20 miles from Nixon, consider visiting these cities on your motorhome camping trip. While Pyramid Lake is acclaimed as the country’s most beautiful desert lake, it has another claim to fame, that of being a world-class fishery and the only habitat in the world for the Cui-ui fish. Fishing here is so legendary that it has attracted celebrities, foreign royals, and a former US president.

Discover Pyramid Lake

Getting Outdoors

Pyramid Lake offers plenty to do when it comes to outdoor recreation, and renting an RV is a great way to travel here and experience the great outdoors. Keep in mind that permits are required for all kinds of outdoor recreation in and around the lake since it is in a reserve.

The water of this lake comes from the Truckee River, which flows from its source, Lake Tahoe. Since the lake has no real outlet, there are certain fish species that thrive in the waters here. Anglers can enjoy fishing in Pyramid Lake for Lahontan Cutthroat Trout and Cui-ui, both native to the lake. Other fish species include Tahoe sucker, Tui chub, and Sacramento Perch. You’ll need a Pyramid Lake fishing permit to fish in the lake, but there’s no need for a Nevada fishing license. Shore fishing and boat fishing are popular in the lake, but the use of bait is prohibited.

With a depth of 350 feet, there is a large area for boating in Pyramid Lake. The western shore of the lake has more amenities available, including launching ramps for boats. High-speed water boating is permitted in the main body of the lake, or you could opt to jet ski.

Bird watchers can paddle closer to the Anaho Island, a National Wildlife Refuge where you’ll get to see American white pelicans, great blue herons, and snowy egrets.

Drive your RV rental to Paiute Tribe Museum and Visitor Center to get an understanding of the landscape and history attached to Pyramid Lake and its surrounding areas, and why it is considered such a sacred part of tribal life.

Camping at Pyramid Lake

Pyramid Lake camping areas require permits that can be bought online. The Pyramid Lake Marina Campground is located by the water’s edge and has around 44 sites with full hookups. Other amenities include big rig access, pull-thru sites, dump station, water, laundry, restrooms and hot showers, a small camp store, a horseshoe pit, and tetherball court. If you want to go boating, there’s a boat launch just two miles away at Pelican Point.

To camp in an RV near Pyramid Lake, consider the Sparks Marina RV Park in Sparks, about 38 miles away. It’s a large campground with over 350 sites. Amenities include pull-thru sites, full hookups, 30 and 50 amp electric service, big rig access, sewers, water, WiFi, restrooms and showers, laundry, a camp store, and a clubhouse. Let the kids splash around in the pool. Pets are welcome at the campground and can make use of the pet area.

Exploring the Area

After exploring the Pyramid Lake area, consider a drive to Reno in your Washoe County camper rental. Known as the "biggest little city in the world," Reno has a thriving casino industry that attracts visitors from far and wide. But there is more to this little big city than just casinos. Museums, zoos, and the great outdoors are big draws to the city too.

Downtown Reno is home to the Riverwalk Area, located along the Truckee River. It’s a bustling area with art galleries, restaurants and of course, the beautiful river that gushes by.

Car lovers make your way to the National Automobile Museum, home to over 200 vehicles including horseless carriages, racing cars, and celebrity rides.

The Nevada Museum of Art has great permanent collections of art ranging from photography, ethnic art, contemporary art and art from the greater west.

Kids will love the Tery Lee Wells Nevada Discovery Museum, a hands-on science center exploring everything from science to engineering, technology to art and math. Don’t miss the three-story high jungle gym.

You can’t come to Reno and not hit the casinos. The casino at Eldorado has historical significance, being operational since 1973. Try your hand at Lady Luck with slot machines, roulette, poker or sports betting. The casino is open 24 hours a day, so drop by anytime.

Tuck into some great regional fare in Reno, or if you’re craving something different, there are tons of restaurants serving up a variety of cuisines, including cheap eats, chain eateries, cafés, and bistros. Don’t forget to stock up on supplies at one of the convenience stores. Fill up your rental RV at one of the gas stations before heading on to your next adventure.
