A popular outdoor activity here is birdwatching, thanks to the massive amounts of species that call this park home. Because of its location next to the Chihuahuan Desert, the park is a popular migration spot for various shorebirds, including the American White Pelican. Outdoor water options include kayaking or canoeing in Brantley Lake. This massive lake is surrounded by stunning landscapes and is very easy to access thanks to the two boat ramps located nearby. There are some kayak and canoe rentals available if you didn’t bring your own. Fishing is also an option, although you’ll need to have a fishing license with you.

Another activity to do while here is hiking. There are about three miles of trails in the park which will take you to Brantley Lake or near the Pecos River Valley. While hiking, you’ll come across various types of wildlife and plants, such as prairie dogs, geckos, yuccas, and cactus.

RV rentals in Eddy County have the option to stay at Brantley Lake State Park, although reservations for a site is needed at least one day in advance. The campground offers 51 motorhome sites which feature amenities such as electric, showers, and a playground. Keep in mind there is a 40-foot maximum length limit for RVs.

This campground is open year-round and has a few ADA-accessible areas. There is a visitor center nearby where guests can talk with park rangers or grab some brochures about the park. Pets are allowed at the campground although they need to be on a leash at all times.

There are many places to explore near Brantley Lake State Park if you’d like to take some day trips with your camper. One spot to consider in Carlsbad is Carlsbad Caverns National Park. The caverns are home to over 119 caves which can be explored by yourself or with a park ranger. In addition to viewing the caves, you could also sign up for one of the many events held here, such as watching the bat flights at night or taking a moon hike with a ranger through the desert. For nature lovers, you’ll also find plenty of stunning native plants surrounding the caverns outside, which include cacti, mushrooms, and wild grasses.

Round up the family and head to Roswell to visit the Roswell Museum and Art Center with your travel trailer. The museum celebrates the history of America’s Southwest throughout art and includes sculptures, paintings, and decorative arts. It also houses numerous archaeological artifacts which were found in the nearby area. The museum also explores more behind the alien life believed to often visit Roswell by featuring pieces of art related to it.

About two hours away in Alamogordo is the White Sands National Monument. This stunning outdoor destination is best known for its white gypsum sand dunes. Guests can hike through the dunes or take a sled and slide down one. The park offers ranger-guided tours which will take you through the park during the sunset or at night to view the constellations and moon. Besides these activities, you could also hike through the park to view its stunning plants of yuccas and Rio Grande cottonwood trees.

There are many gas stations located near Brantley Lake State Park, so you’ll be able to fill your motorhome up easily. In addition to this, there are quite a few places to grab a bite to eat, many of which serve local favorites like tacos, green chile stew, and sopapilla. If you’re looking to buy some souvenirs during your trip, there are a few small shops located nearby as well.
