Grants was first founded as a railroad camp back in the late 19th century when the three Grants Brothers were awarded a contract to build a major portion of the Atlantic & Pacific Railroad through the region. Grants was initially called Grants Camp and Grants Station before early residents settled on the name Grants. After the railroad was completed and the logging ceased in the nearby Zuni Mountains, Grants shifted its focus to growing carrots. At one point in time, the town was known as the Carrot Capital of the United States. Newly built dams and irrigation systems helped this desert town prosper as an agricultural hub for some time, before uranium was discovered in the soil, causing a major mining boom in town, further changing the course of the town’s history. From that point on, Grants became the Uranium Capital of the World, a far cry from its humble logging and carrot growing origins.

After the mining boom ended in the late 1980s, Grants was again forced to change its livelihood. To remain relevant, the village slowly became a tourism hotspot, commonly visited by residents of Albuquerque, and by people from throughout the country too.
