In Albuquerque, there's the Petroglyph National Monument. Spanning over 17 miles, this national monument contains one of the largest petroglyphic sites on the continent. Visitors can view the different symbols carved into the surrounding rocks that are believed to have been made by both Native Americans and Spanish explorers. In addition to this, Petroglyph National Monument is home to a variety of trails that will take you by a handful of unique geological formations.

About two hours away from Santa Rosa Lake State Park in Santa Fe is the Palace of the Governors. This adobe structure was built in 1610 and was the original seat of government for the state before moving to a different building. Besides this, the Palace of the Governors was also where Lew Wallace wrote part of his famous book Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ. After being restored in the early 1900s, it soon became a state history museum and was placed on the National Register of Historic Landmarks. Guided tours are available.

During your time here, head over to Clovis to tour the Norman Petty Recording Studio. This historic 1950s studio is where rock-and-roll icon Buddy Holly recorded many of his hits. While here, you’ll be able to view old recording equipment, like microphones and control boards, and other vintage decors, such as a Coca-Cola machine and furniture. In addition to this, you can learn about how recordings in the studio were made and discover more behind the music from the 1950s. Tours are available of the structure, but appointments must be made ahead of time.
