The mid-sized Texas city of Amarillo is about 120 miles north of Lubbock, in the grass prairie of the Texas Panhandle. Home to the American Quarter Horse Hall of Fame, Amarillo brings the rodeo riders from all over the world to the annual World Championship Ranch Rodeo. Cadillac Ranch is a must see on your Texas Panhandle journey. Started in 1974 by a group of art-hippies from San Francisco, Cadillac Ranch is more popular than ever. The group which created this projects was called The Ant Farm. They were subsidized by billionaire Stanley Marsh III who wanted a puzzling piece of public art. What they came up with was a line of ten Cadillacs that were half-buried, nose-down, in the dirt (at the same angle as the Great Pyramid of Giza apparently). The cars face west in a line along Route 66 just west of Amarillo.
A very RV-friendly city, Amarillo has a variety of different parks to choose from. Everything from Oasis RV Park with a swimming pool and expansive complex to the Route 66 RV Ranch that offers an authentic Amarillo experience (complete with quarter horse statues along the highway).
Another spot to check out is the Amarillo RV Ranch. The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery that is just down the street. Bring your appetite, as this restaurant is known for their 72-oz steak challenge. Also nearby is a Walmart Supercenter, the perfect place to restock supplies for the Amarillo rental RV before getting back on the road.
