Sugarite Canyon State Park is located in the far northern portion of New Mexico, on the border with Colorado. This area is quite rural, but the nearest town is Raton, found a little over five miles to the southeast. The nearest larger town is Trinidad, Colorado which is around 30 miles to the north, while the nearest larger city is Pueblo, CO, which is over 100 miles to the north.

This park is situated in the arid, hilly portion of New Mexico that is frequented by pine forests. Sugarite Canyon State Park features a lake, so water-based activities are easily available here. This is also a prime place to enjoy camping, hiking, trail riding, picnicking, and even winter sports!

Getting Outdoors

Renting an RV at Sugarite Canyon State Park will allow you to enjoy activities that span a wide variety of interests. There are miles of trails available at Sugarite Canyon State Park. They can be used for hiking, horseback riding or mountain biking. During the snowy season, people even enjoy using these for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. This area of New Mexico is high enough in altitude that it generally receives a decent amount of snow during the winter months. The trails vary in length and difficulty. Visitors should note that the park sits at an altitude of more than one mile above sea level, so they may notice the lack of oxygen.

Camping at Sugarite Canyon State Park

Two separate campgrounds are offered here. They can accommodate a wide variety of RV's, and some of the sites offer full hookups. Many of the others provide hookups for electricity only. Reservations are encouraged, as many people enjoy visiting this cooler section of the state.

Bathrooms with running water and showers are available in a few locations around the campground. More rustic bathroom accommodations are available in other areas. Pets are welcome to enjoy your stay with you as well. Exploring the Area

When you book an RV in Colfax County, you will find attractions that appeal to everyone in the family. There are plenty of fun activities found in the old, western town of Raton. Eclectic shops, theaters, spas, and golf courses are all available for your enjoyment. As you walk around, you will notice some of the historical architecture found around town as well. State park RV camping will give you the chance to tour all the sites a region has to offer.

The Raton Museum is located in town. The coal mining history of the local region is highlighted here. Guided tours, some from the museum curator himself, are available. Speaking events are sometimes held here that discuss various historical topics. The museum will have a current schedule of the events. Exhibits displayed range from antiques and local artwork to wars the country has been involved in.

The Capulin Volcano National Monument is located in Capulin, around 30 miles to the east of the park. This whole area used to see a lot of volcanic activity. Don't worry, though, the volcanoes have been quiet for many years! Visitors can hike to the rim of the volcano and around its caldera. Other trails are available as well. There is also a Visitor's Center that discusses the formation of the site and its history.

While this is a fairly rural area, there are plenty of gas stations and grocery stores located less than 10 miles from the park. They will make for an easy stop to refill any supplies you need. Feel free to stop by one of the many local restaurants found along Main Street, in Raton, as well. Many specialize in the food this state is known for, the green chile.
