Lathrop State Park is found in the southeastern portion of Colorado, close to the tiny town of Walsenburg, near the I-25 corridor. It is situated east of the Rockies, where the mountains that comprise the western portion of the state meet the prairies of eastern Colorado. The nearest, reasonably-sized town is Trinidad, located about 40 miles to the south, while the nearest larger city is Pueblo, found around 50 miles to the north.

This is a fairly arid area, comprised of grasslands and scrub brush, all in the shadow of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains to the west. Several factors make this park unique. For one, it was the first state park established in Colorado. It is also one of the only state parks to have a golf course on-site. This, along with several lakes that are located on park property and the rest of the park grounds, offer countless recreational activities.

Renting an RV at Lathrop State Park will give you the chance to enjoy the wide variety of activities it makes available to visitors. Martin and Horseshoe Lakes are both found on-site, as well as several smaller bodies of water. Opportunities for fishing, swimming, water and paddle sports, and beaches for sunning yourself are available at these areas. The lakes are said to be good places to test your water-skiing prowess.

The state park offers multiple trails of varying difficulty levels as well. One is paved and wheelchair accessible; it skirts the shores of Martin Lake. Others climb the nearby hilly land, providing commanding views of the neighboring mountains as well as opportunities to take in the flora that make up the local ecosystem. Some of the trails are open to biking while others allow only foot traffic.

There is a slew of activities available at this state park. An archery practice range is available on-site, and birdwatching is another common activity enjoyed here. This park is thought to offer one of the better birding experiences of many of the parks in the state. There are also ranger-lead, educational, and nature programs offered during the summer months.

Camping at Lathrop State Park

This park makes camping with an RV easy to do. There are several campgrounds available here, and staying on-site will give you easy access to all the activities this location makes available.

There are campgrounds with individual and group sites offered at Lathrop State Park. They provide campsites with hookups and those that are more rustic. The sites can also fit a variety of sizes of RVs. Reservations are encouraged as this is a popular park. One of the campgrounds is even open during the winter months.

The more rustic of the two campgrounds provides vault toilets and can only accommodate smaller RVs. The other location has electric hookups, restrooms with flush toilets and a shower facility. This one can accommodate larger RVs as well. Both offer potable water, as well as picnic tables and fire pits at all sites. As there are so many fun activities to be enjoyed here, RV camping at Lathrop State Park is commonplace, so amenities should be readily available.

Exploring the Area

When you book an RV in Huerfano County, you will find many unique attractions nearby. Some unique sites found near town are the Ludlow Massacre Monument and the Walsenburg Mining Museum. The monument is for miners and their families who were killed in an uprising more than 100 years ago. The museum highlights the history of the mining industry in the local area. State park RV camping will allow you the chance to enjoy the sites found all around the local region.

Great Sand Dunes National Park is found around 70 miles away.
