Discover Honeoye Lake RV rentals for memorable road trips
Honeoye Lake, NY, is one of the smallest Finger Lakes. The locals claim the story behind the name is about a Seneca Native American whose finger was bitten by a rattlesnake. He cut the finger off with a tomahawk, and it fell to the ground, lying there. “Honeoye” roughly translates to “where the finger lies.”
Long and narrow, Honeoye Lake was formed by the Great Glacier as it retreated its way north, some 10,000 years ago. An annual tradition performed by the locals is called the Ring of Fire, usually celebrated on Labor Day weekend to mark the end of the summer. Flares and bonfires are lit around the lake and left burning till they die out.
The closest large town is Geneseo, about 17 miles west. Search for an RV in Ontario County, NY and gain easy access to the neighboring finger lakes, state parks, and federal forest parks as well as Rochester, NY, a major urban area about 40 miles north.

Getting Outdoors
Partly due to Honeoye’s small size and partly because a large portion of its tree-lined shorelines are private property, Lake Honeoye doesn’t draw as large of a crowd during the high season as the other Finger Lakes. At the north end, which is open to the public, there is a small beach and a boat launch. The south end, where New York state has purchased land for wildlife preserves and refuges, tends to be quieter. Fish thrive in Lake Honeoye’s shallow oxygen-rich waters, and it’s a rare day when anglers and fishermen go home empty-handed. Common fish include rock, smallmouth and largemouth bass, walleye, yellow perch, chain pickerel, and bluegill. There is a second boat launch, managed by the state, near the south end.Although fishing is an activity enjoyed by many, visitors also go tubing, swimming, water-skiing, and wake-boarding. In wintertime, the fun doesn’t stop. Because the lake is shallow, it tends to freeze quickly and stays solid throughout the winter months. Visitors and locals embark on ice-fishing, skating, and ice-boating adventuresHoneoye Lake’s larger cousin lake to the east, Canandaigua Lake, has more room to spread out. Like Honeoye Lake, the northern end tends to be crowded in summers. However, the far south end often is quieter. The High Tor Wildlife Management Area, though it disallows RV camping, has two picturesque waterfalls near hiking trails that will appeal to photographers and nature lovers.
Camping at Honeoye Lake
Honeoye Lake and the surrounding state forests, refuges and wildlife preserves are all strictly day-use parks. When you plan your trip, be sure to consider where you’ll park your rental RV when you embark on your adventures. There is a handful of private RV camping near Honeoye Lake, however. The Tamarack Campground in Springwater is a roomy property with over 200 sites. Also dog-friendly, it offers amenities like electric and water hookups, a dump station, and a small swimming pool. However, it’s open only April through October.Ontario County Park at Gannett Hill in Naples is one of the few public parks in the area to allow camping with an RV. Although it does offer electric hookups, there are no sewer or water hookups. The restroom is a short walk from most RV sites. There is a community fire pit for all to enjoy. The main plus to this park is its easy access to several hiking trails, one of which culminates with an impressive view of the mountain ridges to the west and east.Bristol Woodlands Campground is a good option for camping with an RV. Near Bristol, NY, the RV campground boasts oversized sites that are shaded by mature trees. Most sites have full hookups, and there are fire rings at each site.
Exploring the Area
To the east, west, and south, ancient mountains stand guard. North, the flat land is a patchwork of farms and small towns. Some 40 miles further north, Rochester, NY, is a bustling small city with a humming nightlife and thriving culture and music scene. Hop into a rental motorhome and find your adventure. Roseland Waterpark in Canandaigua is one of the largest waterparks in the Finger Lakes region. Encompassing over 50 acres, it features cool water attractions that provide relief on a hot summer day, including a wave pool, a raft ride, a pulse-pounding waterslide with a 65-foot drop, and many more wet rides.Hit the slopes why you are here! In the summer, Bristol Mountain transforms into a treetop aerial adventure course. Share the treetop canopy with birds and zip from tree to tree. Test your balance and prowess on the tightrope, rope bridges, and ladders. When snow blankets the mountaintops, Bristol Mountain switches over to its ski-resort status. The resort showcases 38 runs ranging from beginner to expert. With so few towns in the area, adding to the light pollution that invades many other suburbs, the Finger Lakes region is quite ideal for observing the night sky. On an especially clear night, the Milky Way, though faint, can be spotted with the naked eye. The Rochester Astronomy Club hosts one or two public “star parties” every month (weather permitting) at the Max Farash Center on the outskirts of Bloomfield. Several telescopes are set up and available for the public to use. View distant planetary bodies like Jupiter and Mars, the moon, and depending on the time of the year, various star systems, nebulas, and galaxies.Although the logistics for finding camping near Honeoye Lake may be a challenge, the opportunity to view the Milky Way, waterfalls and miles of hiking makes it well worth the effort. Find your perfect adventure in upstate, New York as you set out making memories.
