Hikers who enjoy having their heads in the clouds should begin their adventure by heading towards High Peaks Wilderness. This wild forest and mountain track spans three counties, Essex, Hamilton, and Franklin, so any trip here could last as long as you wish. A hiking trip in High Peaks Wilderness can put you on top of the world, with 360-degree views, or amid a cool, quiet forest where you may get a chance to see the wildlife that resides there. Hoffman Notch Wilderness is an outdoor recreational area that is open to the public year-round, providing activities in the spring, summer, fall, and winter. The wilderness occupies a valley or “notch” that is situated between two mountains, the Blue Ridge Range and Washburn Ridge. The park has miles upon miles of trails for hiking, and you can also fish in the streams and ponds if you're hoping for something more relaxing. If you'd rather stay at ground level, Moose River Plains is an outdoor recreation area with a long list of activities you can enjoy within its boundaries. The area has a couple of small mountains, but most of the park is low lying, with rolling hills and river valleys. The park is a transitional zone neighbored to the east and north by large mountains and neighbored to the west and south by much smaller foothills. Hiking, cycling, and canoeing are just some of the activities you can enjoy.
