The town of Blowing Rock is only about 10 miles to the east of the park. This touristy area offers many things to do, including historical sites and museums to tour that tells the story of the local area. The town was named after a local, prominent rock formation that looks as though it has been shaped by the blowing wind. Hiking trails are found near here, and it offers expansive views of the valley below. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic route that runs nearby. The road stretches for over 400 miles and travels through Virginia, Tennessee, and North Carolina. The parkway gets its name as it traverses stretches of the Blue Ridge Mountains. You will find picnic spots, picturesque turnouts, and hiking opportunities along the way. This is also a great place to view local wildlife and to enjoy leaf colors during the fall.
