Elk Knob State Park covers over 4,227 acres and is one of North Carolina’s most recently created state parks. The park is best known for containing Elk Knob, which is one of the highest peaks in the area. Part of this state park also contains a section of the North Fork New River.

The state park features an interesting mixture of flora and fauna, making it a popular spot for hiking and photography. Elk Knob State Park is situated near Johnson City and Asheville.

Getting Outdoors

You’ll discover numerous things to do at Elk Knob State Park. One is wildlife photography. The park is packed with a variety of different animals that photographers can try capturing. Some you might see are black bears, turkeys, deer, and bobcats. You’ll also find plenty of birds, such as finches and wrens, flying around.

Visitors could also go fishing. Fishers can head over to the North Fork New River to try catching trout. You can stand along the shoreline of the river or take a boat out on the water to go fishing. While the river is filled with fish year-round, the best times to try catching some is from May to October.

Another thing to do at the park is hiking. There are many trails winding through the park, including a few that will take you to the top of Elk Knob. Along the way, hikers will be able to view some of the park’s stunning plants and trees, like orchids, azaleas, birch trees, and sugar maples. Hikers should be cautious when trekking through the wilderness as it can sometimes contain poisonous spiders.

Camping at Elk Knob State Park

When you book an RV in Watauga County, stay at one of the many nearby motorhome campgrounds when visiting Elk Knob State Park. One option is the Boone KOA. Amenities provided at this camping spot include 50 amps, firewood, and water. There is also a pool and mini-golf course. This campground does have a motorhome length limit of 60-feet.

There’s also the Hitchin Post RV Park. This RV campground offers views of the nearby mountains and is often visited by a variety of wildlife, like deer. There are 40 travel trailer sites available that come with amenities such as water, 30, 50 amps, sewer hookups, and dumping station access. Pets are allowed to stay but must remain leashed at all times.

Exploring the Area

There are quite a few destinations near Elk Knob State Park, should you like to take your RV on some day trips. Two hours away in Charlotte is the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. This botanical garden overlooks a local lake and spans over 380 acres long. The garden is open year-round and features various types of blooming plants for each season. A few themed gardens you’ll find here are the Cottage Garden, Canal Garden, Orchid Conservatory, and Perennial Gardens. This attraction also has over three miles of hiking trails that go through woodlands and meadows.

In Greensboro, visitors could stop by the Guilford Courthouse National Military Park. This park commemorates the Battle of Guilford that occurred on the grounds in 1781. While here, visitors will learn more about the significance of this battle, including how it eventually led to a victory for the United States during the Revolutionary War. There is a visitor center that contains exhibits highlighting the battle as well as an 18th-century farm site guests can walk to. Guided tours from late May to September are provided by the park.

Head over to Winston-Salem to explore the Old Salem Museums and Gardens. Situated inside a historic district, this attraction allows visitors to learn more about the Moravian community and how it changed the culture of the area. Old Salem Museums and Gardens feature restored structures that now serve as restaurants and shops. There is also a special handcrafts store that sells items created by the community, such as pottery, textiles, and painted gourds. For those looking for a unique experience while here, stop by the tavern, which serves traditional Moravian dishes.

While in Winston-Salem, take a quick trip over to Historic Bethabara Park. This park was also once settled by Moravians during the mid-1700s. Visitors can stop by the park where they’ll be able to view historic churches, houses, and barns. The grounds are also filled with flourishing gardens that grow flowers and vegetables during the spring and summer. When you’re done exploring the park, you could stop by its gift shop to buy locally-made goods, like lanterns and beeswax candles.
